#1 Wisconsin vs. Rutgers |
Friday, Oct. 13, 2023 7 PM Central |
UW Field House Madison, Wisconsin |
The still-undefeated Wisconsin Badgers welcome the red-hot Rutgers Scarlet Knights to Madison for a Friday night matchup. Rutgers is coming off of a stunning upset of Minnesota, their first victory ever over a ranked team. Their offense is led by reigning B1G Setter of the Week Alyssa Nayar. The Badgers are returning home after a trip to Illinois, where 12 team blocks gave them a sweep in Huff. Leading that charge is reigning B1G Defensive Player of the Week Caroline Crawford. The theme of the evening is Octoberfest, and the "Field Haus" will be rocking with... polka? Lederhosen? Who knows.

Oktoberfest is a beer festival and traveling carnival that is held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany from the middle of September through the first weekend in October. It dates back to the October 12, 1810 marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend horse races and other festivities held in front of the city gates to celebrate the royal event. The decision to repeat the horse races and spectacle again the following year launched what is now the annual Oktoberfest tradition.
Paintings by Joseph Karl Stieler, 1825-26.
Oktoberfest begins with a parade led by the mayor of Munich, followed by carriages and floats featuring the festival's breweries, restauranteurs, and performers. After the parade, at exactly noon, the mayor taps the first beer barrel and serves the first liter of beer to the Bavarian Minister-President. Each year, bets are placed on how many swings of the mallet the mayor will need to tap the keg - the record and contemporary average is two, with the worst performance occurring in 1950, when Thomas Wimmer required 19. When the keg is tapped, the mayor announces "O'zapft is!" ("it has been tapped!"), and twelve gunshots are fired on the stairway of Ruhmeshalle to declare the festival open and signal to the other breweries that they may begin serving beer.
Only beers conforming to the Reinheitsgebot (German regulations for beer ingredients and purity) and brewed within the city limits of Munich can be served at Oktoberfest. Ther are two distinct beer styles: a traditional Märzen lager and a paler Festbier. 2023 saw a record-breaking 7.2 million attendees of Oktoberfest, and 6.5 million liters (1.72 million US gallons) of beer were poured - that's almost three Olympic swimming pools full of beer.
