We've been discussing this in the Volleyball Source Discord channel during this Verona-Monza match and don't have an answer - when, if it all, did Francesco Sani switch his sporting nationality to Italian? The LegaVolley website lists his birth place as USA (obviously) but his sporting nationality as Italian. He's starting at outside hitter with only two other Italians in the starting 7, and this lineup wouldn't be compliant with the Italian foreigner limit except if Sani is considered Italian. Sure, he clearly has Italian heritage (his name is Francesco Sani, for goodness sake) but he played U19 and U21 for the US and I never heard anything about him switching Hey Rob,
I'm not sure if this helps, but I am 99% sure Cesco has dual citizenship through his father. I haven't talked to him about this specifically, but I'll ask if I see him when he's home. I believe his family is from the Trento region of northern Italy. In a way, he has it made for his future in the Italian league, (which I'm really excited to watch).
My bet is that his dual citizenship is a great loophole for the Italian League's foreign player restrictions. I don't think he has any intentions of leaving his role/potential roles with USAMNT but I could be not up to date on that!

I find it a little weird that he can be represented as an Italian but can also play for USA, if that’s true. Just my opinion though

His citizenship allows him play as a domestic Italian in their league, but if he wanted to play for their National Team he would have to transfer Federations (like Gabi) and go through that entire process.

His citizenship allows him play as a domestic Italian in their league, but if he wanted to play for their National Team he would have to transfer Federations (like Gabi) and go through that entire process. Sebastian Sole has dual citizenship as well and had to change his federation to play as a local. Basically, he retired from Argentinian NT after Tokyo OG to play as a local in Serie A. Actually, many players have dual citizenship (Bruno, Podrascanin, among those big stars), so it's obvious that Sani's situation is different within FIVB rules, not according to the local league rules. The article says that FIVB declared that he's a member of the Italian Volleyball Federation (that's why his sporting nationality is listed as Italian on official website) and thus Verona was able to register him as a local: www.volleyball.it/2023/10/23/notizie/argomenti/superlega/articolo/verona-francesco-sani-ai-box-in-attesa-di-scendere-in-campo-da-italiano.html. Sorry, it's rather the answer to francakesfordinner post. Regardless, I think the question isn't 'if' he switched his NT-eligibility, but 'how'. De Cecco also has Italian citizenship, and yet he can't play as a local player even though Civitanova club has some legit issues with limits, so Sani's membership in Federvolley is for real, I suppose. Verona earlier this year signed Australian MB Aidan Zingel, because he received as well Italian citizenship - and Radostin Stoytchev (coach of Verona) said he can't play yet because some FIVB documents regarding his sporting nationality are missing. The fun fact is that Sole or Dragan Stankovic are theoretically eligible to play for Italian NT, but they changed their sporting nationality just for league's sake. They can't play for their 'native' NTs anymore though.

I know he's surrounded by tremendous veteran talent but that Micah Ma'a sure does hold his own with his setting

Lmao Halkbank just had 2 setters on court and N'gapeth took the set I think Romano's injury is an ab muscle injury, but I haven't heard anything about when he'll be back
