Look again. UW is overachieving. It started with a young, thin roster and promptly saw it further eroded by a season-ending injury to its strongest outside hitter and corner blocker coming into the season. This is a team that deserves credit for stretching its resources to achieve results beyond expectations.

This is a team that deserves credit for stretching its resources to achieve results beyond expectations. What result has Washington overachieved in? Were they expected not to win against to Cal, Indiana, or Long Beach State? They also took losses to UTEP and Pepperdine. I think Washington is about where I expected them to be - a bubble team that could get in to the tournament or left out.

I do think their level of play has improved significantly. RPI: 31. UW 43. Cal 44. Indiana 50. LBSU [53. USC?] [57. UCLA?] 62. Colorado 78. Utah [99. Arizona?] 121. UNLV 130. Southeastern La. 131. At Maples Pavilion last Sunday UCLA put up a pretty good fight against the Card. Their passing wasn't bad and they forced the middle attack quite a bit and it had some success, especially in sets one and two. Reft's presence may now be making an impact. As Hambly pointed out in his chalk talk, they have good athletes at just about every position.
U-Dub's best bet is to hit over UCLA's setter Pak when she's on the front row. Next best option is send balls to the right side against Cheridyn Leverette. Both UCLA's middles are sizable and experienced providing good offense and blocking. In serve, U-Dub should target Olson and Leverette, although Olson often jumps out of the way and the L steps in to pass.

Looks like UW's serving vs. UCLA's blocking:
Aces/Set (SE/Set): 3. UW 1.93 (2.04) 10. UCLA 1.27 (2.44)
Blocks/Set: 4. UCLA 2.69 11. UW 1.91
Can UW's serving disrupt UCLA's sideout offense enough to make it difficult to feed their middles?:
Hitting%: 5. Dodson UCLA .378 (2.1k/s) 12. Becker UCLA .323 (1.3k/s)

I think Washington is about where I expected them to be - a bubble team that could get in to the tournament or left out. Indiana returned plenty of key players and had been improving the last few years. LBSU had come off beating #1 Texas on the opening weekend so they had pretty lofty expectations. Coming into the season, the Huskies returned two starters (Bays has been injured too), so I think they've overachieved by slowly improving their play and chemistry for a very new (and youthful) team.
