Chavira can pass. She was previously a starting setter, and can play some decent defense. Tatum Hoff was a serving sub and played through the back last year. She’s a well-trained player with an Olympian Dad. I think Tyler was counting on his team bouncing back from a string of points like they have, and it got away from him. But hiding Chacon should have been as good an indicator as there is that he should take a risk. If I remember correctly, Chavira even hit some early in her career right? She's a great all-around volleyball player. Chavira played some opp her frosh year, and had some solid matches, also played setter, so she could play some libero I guess, but not really the defensive player as others not quick. Tatum Hoff was never a serving sub, never a libero, and has never played thru the back-row last year or this year, aside from maybe 1 -2 rotations all year, and she plays OH anyway. Nicole Hoff played libero, has not been a serving sub. she has been a DS sub. swithcing those two out probably wasn't even considered. Hoff can have the same issues Chacon had, in fact SB targeted Hoff last night and had some success with a big run when they did. Tyler has been a bit like Walters, he hasn't yanked players very quickly in matches, even when they are struggling receiving. But apparently Tyler is crazy as well.

Chavira was a setter but hasn't passed for Long Beach. And Tatum Hoff played in one set last year. Either way, I do agree that Hilderbrand was waiting for his team to adjust. Even with poor passing, they only lost by 2 in set one and was down by 2 at 16-14 when Hawaii went on a 9-1 run. That’s the point. That is the point where chacon was REALLY struggling but Tyler made no adjustments. I was sure he would change the libero jersey in the third but he did not I try not to rag on the players but it may have been the worst passing performance I’ve seen from a libero this year She’s talented but boy did she struggle tonight

They were possible options (which was a point that was raised), but clearly Tyler wasn’t all that open to alternatives.

I don't see what goes on in the gym so it may be possible. For me, just looking at the stats, you would be asking Chavira who has a total of 12 passing receptions in her college career to take over as libero or Tatum Hoff who hasn't played at all in 2023 (who I assume is redshirting) to come in and take over. That sounds more risky than seeing if Chacon can work her way out of her passing slump.

You should consider switching to pickleball. It's quite the rage at the moment.

If you're hiding your libero anyway, you can simply use a substitution in the back row instead and narrow the passing zones for a rotation or two. There's very little to lose.

I don't think Tyler is crazy he made a decision and it didn't pan out. He would've looked like a god if Chacon came out of her slump and bagged 30 digs on the Beach's way to a reverse sweep. Chacon showed the ability to somewhat come out of her slump last week in Honolulu. Coaching is a suggestion and a gamble all at once. I watched the Beach's post-match presser and it sounds like Tyler is going to fight for his team to get a bid (whatever that means.) Even though it's slim to none, I like that he has his team's back no matter what. Congrats to the Beach for a great 2023.

That’s the point. That is the point where chacon was REALLY struggling but Tyler made no adjustments. I was sure he would change the libero jersey in the third but he did not I try not to rag on the players but it may have been the worst passing performance I’ve seen from a libero this year She’s talented but boy did she struggle tonight Fair, but what options exist? He could have swapped out Chacon with Hoff or Giambi, and either let Chacon play DS in their place. Chacon is still there for 3 possible passing rotations. And there is risk in mixing it up with libero with a DS and missing assignments. A LB fan would have to provide better insight than I could if either of those players played libero this season.

You don't have to insert your libero into the lineup. You can use a DS instead, and still have your libero come back into play.

Any option was better.... Chacon was clearly flustered and out of it. I don't think I've ever seen a team hide a libero from the passing rotation throughout almost the entirety of a set.

Congratulations to the Big West and all the schools that made it to the inaugural Big West Women's Volleyball Championships. It was such a fun time watching it on ESPN plus and the announcers did a phenomenally good job. You’ve all made history. Go Bows!🌈😎🤙🏽

Aww man, I was an enjoying a good Long Beach fan meltdown. Kinda reminded me of the student section tonight. They looked shellshocked.

Question for next year... was having the entire tournament (all 5 matches) in a single VT thread "good", "okay", "bad" or "terrible"?
