I’m really happy she gets to experience both the trip and time at the VNL. When all is said and done she’s going to go down as a generational player, but I also think we have another very special Texas team on our hands. We are just lousy with talent this year - it's possible to have two full teams and still have talent leftover, and the B Team is still hella stacked. OH: Skinner / Wenaas MB: Singletary / Ames RS: Rutherford (DS Akana) L: Halter S: Swindle/Carlson [Can't decide] OH: Helmers / Byrd (DS Kenna) MB: Bunton / Franklin RS: Devin L: Emerick S: Carlson/Swindle Not listed: Tomkinson, Lauenstein, Binney, Ramirez The fact this isn’t including Lauenstein is just crazy. Y’all are rolling in it! I feel like a scrimmage with these two teams would be super even: OH: Skinner/Helmers MB: Singletary/Bunton S: Swindle RS: Lauenstein (DS Emerick) L: Akana OH: Wenaas/Byrd MB: Franklin/Ames S: Carlson RS: Rutherford (DS Ramirez) L: Halter I’d pay to see that. And y’all would still have stellar depth for either side in Kahahawai, Miller, Tomkinson, etc

When all is said and done she’s going to go down as a generational player, but I also think we have another very special Texas team on our hands. I went back and looked at the things I posted about M. Skinner when she was in club. Funny enough, the first instance on volleytalk was commenting that I was surprised that Elliott couldn't keep her in state in the first place... She was someone that people were NOT talking about enough (IMO). Granted, 2020 had some standout prep stars putting up gawdy numbers, but there was little doubt in my mind that, by at least 16's, Skinner would be my first choice pick in the class. ...I'm still a bit surprised Elliott couldn't keep that Houston Skyline 16's hitter from joining her sister in Kentucky. Landfair gets a lot of the hype in this 2020 class but there are some ATHLETES ready to bang the ball in this class. The younger Skinner is gonna be pretty good! speaking of Skinner though...her younger sister, hot damn. I think she's gonna be VERY good. I have seen the Skyline and TAV kids...and there are some absolute studs on those teams for the 2020 class. I've liked Skinner the most out of Texas from 2020 so far. It's because classes tend to be judged by how many elite OH's and setters they contain. 2020 is relatively light at those positions, but it's pretty deep in middles. hmmmm...... I don't think this class is that light in OH's. they may be a bit shorter than in years past overall, but there are some game changers in this class on the pins..... I think people are really sleeping on the younger Skinner..... but Skinner.... man, I remember watching in back in 2017 and being so freaking impressed. I also would have put skinner #1. She's gonna be crazy good.

Did anyone screen record the match like they did yesterday? I think pointtexas did it yesterday or at least found it. I recorded it. Give me some time to upload and I’ll post the link here again sorry everyone YouTube is taking forever to process the video. I’ll post it as soon as it’s finished

This must feel sweet. In fairness, I think she was ranked the #5 overall player? Somewhere around there, certainly. Her Dad was a big basketball star for Baylor, with no real love for the Longhorns. Texas had grabbed Eggleston and Fields in consecutive classes the previous two years. There were heavy winds blowing against her coming to Texas. If Fields hadn’t transferred first no way Skinner comes to Texas even on the rebound. I still love seeing the comments and I consider myself a big ay fan, but the comments look a lot more prescient out of context than I feel they actually were. She was anything but a sleeper. She just wasn’t being lauded the way #1 overall recruits often are. Even when she transferred I don’t think she was seen the way she is now. She’s really upped her game the last couple of years. To her credit

To her credit No, I would never characterize her as sleeper, not by any means, she was anything but a sleeper, but I still don't think she got enough hype on this board in prep play. As for her progression, meh, I see it as a somewhat natural evolution. 2020 was the messed up covid year and Skinner started out of position on a stacked Kentucky team. I distinctly remember watching that Washington/Kentucky final four thinking to myself, it will probably take two or three years, but at some point she's not going to be able to be stopped. She's gotten better every year, and this year, I expect her to really hit that rarified outlet OH hitter discussion that only a handful of left sides in the last couple decades can lay claim to.

Rutherford playing six rotations seems to not be in the cards, they aren't setting her much in the backrow through those rotations. Shame, she actually has a decent serve and holds her own in zone 1 defense.....
well, set two has a lot more backrow sets.... maybe there is hope for a 6 row opposite next year....but they are mostly setting pipes not D's, so Wenass would likely have to be DS'd to make this offensive arrangement work.

Boy, in the spring I thought she was remarkably woeful on defense. Like, terrifyingly so. She hit a fantastic D ball a few times. I love her as a backrow attack option. I just don’t see it in the cards based on what I saw. To me you have to play Halter and Akana. They don’t have a third little of the caliber they had last year in Barnes or the previous year with Fleck (technically Halter was the third little). To me if Emmerick isn’t the solution they’ll go with Wenaas for 6 rotations over Rutherford. I also have no concept of what the coaches are trying to prioritize over the European trip, either. The team is deep enough the practice gym is going to be extremely competitive in the fall, so maybe Rutherford shows something for the coaches to play her more in the back row then.

Well I dunno about spring play specifically, but just from what I remember her at Kentucky and watching these matches now, she can hold her own in zone 1. Obvi if Skinner is having a player of the year season, Texas won’t need a back row option from the opposite, so it will be moot. Texas surely has plenty of options come fall but I dunno if I’m on this Wenass six rotation train yet.

To be fair in the spring she was surprisingly underwhelming defensively, like REALLY underwhelming 😭
