how do we feel about the setting situation? truthfully, I don’t think there’s a world where we get that much production out of Rutherford today with Swindle, but on the flip side, Carlson and Madi didn’t seem to connect super well on ANYTHING and she is priority #1. I think you might have to let Carlson develop that connection with Madi as long as Carlson isn’t a liability at the net and roll with her. I love that Swindle is so able to come in and put up a block and put up a high ball to Madi when needed though. we are SO incredibly blessed lol 5-2! I agree🫣 this also allows for the setters to each get a different player hot (Carlson - Rutherford / Swindle - Madi). As long as they both connect well with the middles we should be good. I didn’t get to see which setter connected better with Wenaas

I was in the building today for this great win -- much respect to both UW and UT for not padding the early schedule with easy teams. My takeaways:
1. The Wisconsin fans were (understandably) raving about Halter.
2. After FIVB, Paris and the opening at Louisville, it felt strange to go back to line judges. I hope the Greg gets a ball system soon, as I 've been spoiled by the time/challenges saved.
3. By the middle of the third set, the Wisconsin crowd was out of it. Wisconsin had no offensive spark left, and they have a lot of things to figure out or it will be a long B10 season (I think they will).
4. Wenaas seems more comfortable serve receiving than last year (by the end, Wisconsin was out of ideas and shifted around).
5. It was the calmest that I have ever seen JE in a match -- his challenges were surgical, rather than emotional.

Thought Wenaas held up ok passing considering I counted 34 receptions, she really came through with such a heavy workload.
Both teams had iffy setting much of the time.
Overall was not thrilled with the serving although 7 aces with 8 SE is solid but thought on too many rotations Wisconsin was starting the offense with a perfect pass. But the defense and transition offense was much better than Wisconsin.
Mari started like she showed all Spring. So happy to see her shine.
Skinner was ok but most of the issues I saw were setting location. We know what she can do.
Halter is well Halter, straight money, her passing and defense were elite IMO.

I’m not sure what we’re getting from Binney from the service line. Not to pick on her, but she is a serving specialist. Ayden Ames had a serve at set point in the first set after we’d run out of subs (I assume). Her serve resulted in a free ball, then she assisted Skinner for the winner. I didn’t look through the match thread so it was certainly pointed out there, I’m sure, but I wanted to emphasize it. I also liked Singietary’s serves in the spring from what I saw. But we’re not seeing practice. I also know I’m typically slightly underwhelmed by our serving to some degree until late in the season, and then it seems like Elliott takes the governor off. Maybe that’s not the case, but it sure feels like it.

It’s my understanding all the SEC arenas employed the Hawkeye system this offseason, but I don’t know if that includes automated line calls.

Underwhelmed by Carlson’s choices and connection. I still like Swindle at setting by far.

It was clear that Madi and Carlson were not clicking, but if Carlson wins the spot then this is Madi’s 5th different setter in 5 years...🥴
Lilley Grome SKT Swindle Carlson
I wonder how often/if that’s happened before.

Just think if Carlson sets her for a national championship win. Four national championships with 4 different setters. Meh, but I’m not willing to concede things for Swindle. I’m Switzerland on this debate. It’s still a fun topic.

I waited to post this until after we played Wisconsin and the current AVCA NPOY. What are the chances of Madi being the NPOY? There always seems to be a succession plan drummed up by the media. In 2021, it was Logan almost making it as NPOY, and then of course the media and AVCA confirms it in 2022.
Last year it was Madi "should be considered" as NPOY, but they gave it to Franklin, who was just average in the game against Texas. Yes, the open secret is: 1. They vote on the NPOY before the final four in order to present the award at the AVCA banquet before the final four kicks off 2. Almost always, the NPOY has to be in a team in the final four (see below)
For some unknown reason, in my mind I had said to myself, "Okay, Franklin got the NPOY. They give it out to seniors even though they may not fully deserve it because it's their last year" and then shocked/chagrined to find out she's back for her last year. (Okay, my bad I don't pay close attention to Wiscy)
We also know that the NPOY award is [cough] literally a [cough] beauty [Bergsma] contest.
Do you think Madi will get it over the reigning NPOY? While Franklin is the MVP of her team, she's not "Kathyrn Plummer" level of a player.....right?

Really the mental toughness to hold off how many set points? 4? 5? for Wisconsin? was probably the most impressive part of the match- First set of the year in a hostile environment and they respond like pros...

Way early, but M Skinner is the early favorite IMO. Franklin and WI have many challenges ahead of them at this point. Who knows what teams and players may surprise in 2024.

Maybe that’s not the case, but it sure feels like it. Rella had a couple of nice serving runs. She's definitely a better defender than Ayden is, plus she's a setter so her secondary setting is great. And unlike a libero, she can use her hands anywhere, IIRC there were a couple of points where Averi/Ella picked up the dig and Rella stepped in.
