Scrimmage with Alumni this Friday, May 24, 2024 at 6.00 pm. Door opens at 5:30 pm. Free to attend. I got this email from UW Volleyball today. Welcome back Claire Hoffman, Ella May Powell, Lauren Sanders, Kayleigh Nelson, Emma Callee, Justice Magraw and others at our Alumni Match this Friday! See the 2024 squad take on former Huskies in the FREE annual event at Alaska Airlines Arena. Doors open at 5:30 pm. I got the same email. Sounds like fun but not sure I'll be able to go. Would be interested in hearing from anyone who does.

quick recap of the game! heard was not there and barton was there and not dressed. wessells, endsley, wilson, bays, wilmes, bush, huard, and hani are all the people who played. everyone played all around and huard served for middle. the defense left a lot to be desired but there were a lot of great blocks and effort. it was really fun to watch the alum play. ella may powell played very well as well as some of the other alum. justice magraw was great at hyping the crowd up. i will add more to this recap tomorrow, but im busy and just wanted to get something out there for those wondering. also addy acevedo and alexis haury were there, with a couple other girls from their club that are committed elsewhere.

There was a good crowd at the Alumni match for a Friday evening prior to a long weekend. The Huskies were shorthanded with only 8 players suited. Audra and Madi were at OH while Emoni was mainly at OPP. Molly at setter and Lauren Bays at libero. There was a lot of room for improvement in serve receive and defense departments as the alumni did a lot of damage. Hopefully the newcomers can contribute significantly this coming season. Ella and Claire looked even better than ever. Lauren Sanders was a big wall in the middle and Kaleigh Nelson still put a dent on the floor, even after having 2 babies!

Last night was a lot of fun, but (hopefully) not representative of the upcoming season's Husky team. They were going against several pro players, former all-Americans, and three guys that could really jump and smash the ball.

Thanks for the updates from those who got to see the alumni match. Love that Kaleigh Nelson is still out there hammering the ball!
Sounds like the consensus is that serve receive and defense continue to need work. Heard and Tulino as most likely incoming help (maybe Huard?)for passing and floor defense. Anyone else besides Bays, Barton, and Wilmes seem like an option?
How did blocking look? Will Hunt push Hani and Wessels for playing time in the fall?
Interesting that Bush was mostly at opposite. Wondering if we will see a 6-2 with Wilson/Bush and Fletcher/Haury? Did Bush seem to have her swing and power back after surgery? Any improvement out of Wilmes, Wesels, or Hani on the offense side?

Blocking still needs a lot of work. The Alumni often saw open seams to hit, although credit to Ella for finding them. Bush did show some blocking presence on the right side that was mostly lacking last season. She also passed and dug a few balls and hit a few pipes. In my eyes, she hits more effectively from the left side.

Yeah, Bush is more of a classic "L1", but her blocking ability (at 6'3") better fits OPP than Endsley or Wilmes - if Wilson and/or Haury can get decent passes to set her there. I'm thinking a 5-1, with Wilmes and Huard possibly rotating in at DS.

We get Northwestern at home in the fall so should get a chance to see Sophie in action for a different purple team.

Sophie Summers transfers to Northwestern for grad school and volleyball. I wonder what graduate program she will be in at Northwestern? When she graduated from UW, her plan was to get a doctorate in education. Unknown if that has changed. She always seemed like someone who had a life outside of athletics.

Is UW softball having some type of crisis with all the portal jumpers, or is this just the new normal in college sports? Is UW athletics having a bit of a bumpy ride. Cook leaves. AD exits. Basketball coach replaced. Star football coach departs. Not liking the B1G, so far. ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

Cook left mainly because he was worried about the Pac's future. Jen Cohen had some life changes and got an insane $ offer from USC. Dannen left because he's a @$$$π°[€, DeBoer just thought Bama is a better football place (though daughter still coming to play at UW) and Hopkins was underperforming. For each of these that left UW, someone wanted to be here and took the new job.

It doesn't help that everyone with a decent resume is "up for bid." Add to that a disappointing end to a promising season, questionable coaching decisions, etc.
