Hitting .400 in her last match was enough to jump ahead of Hudson (3rd behind Smrek and Franklin at .284) You're correct that Smrek has a higher percentage, but she's a part time middle. I was speaking only of the go-to, well-into-the 3's kps, cleans up the garbage crowd. Smrek isn't among them. Julia's #2. Smrek only hits 0.5 ro out of the middle and only for SR because of the serve stack positioning -- she also takes out a LOT of garbage for us. Not negating anything Julia does (I think she's fab), but don't discount Smrek.

Pull it together. No one thinks Mel is great at setting. Literally no one. 5,000 assists, so what the F do you want from her. She's been a great setter period. Debatable. She has, at times, been a great asset to the team. Consistently an asset, particularly this season. But rarely, if ever, an asset due to the quality of her setting. She "gets it done" is probably the most charitable way to describe her setting skills. Mel was lucky to have set when one of the best opposites in the history of NCAA volleyball was at her peak (two seasons), since the closer she could set a high ball the far more consistent she was at location. Let's also not forget that she set for five seasons (one was shorter, yes). But even into the end of her fifth season, she still struggles to consistently connect on middle sets. I take nothing away from her as a high-level volleyball player. I'm just under zero illusions that the quality of her actual setting has been a specific liability for the ability for this program to reach the level of success we've become accustomed to in the past 10-15 years. Calm down if you think I'm "blaming" Mel for the team not making a final four when she's been setting. She's not the whole reason. But at this level, I don't think there's any rational argument to support the quality of her setting and setting choices not being a hindrance to the team's overall success. Yes,she makes up for it in some degree with excelling at defense. But that is by no means a fair trade, IMO. Believe it or not, it's not easy for me to criticize Mel. I of course don't know her personally, but I like her. I like listening to her in interviews. I like that she is and has been a gopher. I desperately want her to do well. All that said, I will likely look back on her career and be left with an overall sense of "man, if only she could set better."

She’s first team this year for sure. I don’t know how they do it these days with all these teams lol but she will be the highest team. And next year POY potential. I thought so, too, until I started breaking it down. The BIG has an insane amount of talent at OH/Opps. I'd say the following 9 will be ranked ahead of Julia: Beeson, Murray, Mruzik, Franklin, Hudson, Colyer, Batenhorst, Terry, and Londot. Julia's in with a group that includes: Hannah, Chicoine, Leverette, and maybe Ohwobete. Julia deserves 1st team BIG, but there may not be enough slots. My guess is that the BIG will overload at the expense of the other positions. I feel that Julia, Phoebe, and Shaff will be named BIG 2nd team and that Wucherer will be Minnesota's Sportsmanship honoree. I haven't read through all these posts. However, has someone already broken down these players mentioned into Junior, Sr and Grad-5th Year players? This is actually her first full season at OH and she is a Junior.

I mean, Landfair won B1G player of the year two years ago and was first team AA. She's starting on the #2 team in the country right now and could very well win a national championship. But yes on Wookie. Because John Cook has the balls to not put her in the back row and Keegan didn’t Agree...huge difference in coaching styles.

I am looking forward to the Spring matches. So many have talked about Stella's connection with her hitters including Wucherer. I want to witness this myself....which I have yet to. For Wucherer and the teams' sake, I sure hope these fans are right.

There will be a lot of changes with a new setter after half a decade but the hitters will see a more consistently set ball.

Based on sheer offense Hanson is a 1st teamer B1G. However her overall game pales in comparison to some of the aforementioned OHs (per my eye test anyway lol). Just depends on what the voting coaches value She definitely has room for growth in her defense. Again, it is remarkable watching her at OH and this being her first full season starting.

Agree...huge difference in coaching styles. It could have something to do with the wealth of "littles" talent in NE? The so unfortunate about this situation at Minnesota: 1 - In recent seasons, one for sure has played here and then transferred 2 - Two have committed and then decided to go elsewhere 3 - Others have visited and not chosen to play here 4 - The State itself has many "littles", but can they play at the D1 College Level?

It could have something to do with the wealth of "littles" talent in NE? How about, everything mentioned so far. All of that but you also need to take into account the coaching status between the two of them- one is very established, successful at his program for a long time while the other one is up and coming. JCook has more leverage coz Landfair wanted to transfer there while Keegan has to do his best to keep this core players. It’s important for him to keep them especially in his 1st year. He tried his best, that’s how I would put it.

Just depends on what the voting coaches value I would guess they look at her conference hitting stats and that gets her 1st team alone. 4.2 k/s and hitting 0.284. The conference has taken notice of her, especially as of late.

in progress ww.youtube.com/watch?v=OBNosX8CA5U&t=78s add a w and go to 1'20" "the thing I tried to convey to the athletes in the Oregon match is that your are either applying pressure or you're feeling pressure in a volleyball game so as you fail to apply pressure then you are going to feel it on the reciprocating side and things can kind of spiral out of control..."
