Given the up and down season we knew we'd have, I must say the ceiling for this team remains very high. We have a month and a half to see just how high they can get.
With that said, UC Davis is cementing themselves as the top team in the BWC. Altho their RPI isn't the greatest, they did beat Kansas State and UCLA. And they returned all their starters from the year before with a senior go-to in Utterback. I'm starting to feel the loss to UC Davis wasn't as bad as it would have been in previous years. UCD is a solid team.
Pepperdine and UNLV were toss ups IMO. The real sore loss was UC Irvine, but Hawaii seems to drop one or two of these matches every year to teams they should beat. Altho, UCI did just beat LBSU.
Still, we have a very young and inexperienced 13-player roster (12 really since Monahan hasn't played. For Hawaii to beat teams like LBSU and Cal Poly (especially CP) that returns so many senior veterans says a lot to the talent Hawaii *does* have and Ah Mow's ability to coach them up. This CP senior class has notched wins over Van Sickle, Igiede, and Wagoner-led teams so for a lineup with Bamis, Hakas, Sylvester, Leyva, and Adeyemi sweeping them on the road ... did I say it says a lot lol?
TBH, how Hawaii does against UCSB and CSUB will give some good insight on where Hawaii is. Taking care of business against these two teams, just might suggest Hawaii and UC Davis are the top two teams midway through conference play.

TBH, how Hawaii does against UCSB and CSUB will give some good insight on where Hawaii is. Taking care of business against these two teams, just might suggest Hawaii and UC Davis are the top two teams midway through conference play. Kansas State has a current KPI of 144. They lost to UCSB on their own KSU home floor, 0-3. UCD beat them 3-2 on a neutral floor. They have a record of 6-10. They are not a benchmark of UCD strength. Last year's UCD team could have beat them. The UCD win over Sacramento at KPI 115 is a stronger non-conference win. UCLA KPI is 53. Their record is 8-8. This was a good win for UCD, but UCLA is not likely to improve much from where they are at and could easily slide south. It's not the best win for UCD and if UCLA doesn't finish top 50, it won't get them any RPI bonus points. Although it will help with their RPI scheduling bonus. The best KPI points awarded win for UCD was against Cal Poly KPI 51, 3-1 away. Their highest current KPI ranked win has been against Hawai'i KPI 44, 3-1 away. KPI is a better mid-season strength comparator than RPI. KPI factors in SoS, home-away, sets w/l, and you get a next day update. RPI has scheduling bonuses and good win bonuses and bad loss penalties that don't settle and apply until late in the season, and updates only once each week. BWC KPI as of results through 10/18: 44 Hawaii 47 UC-Davis 50 Long Beach State 51 Cal Poly 102 UC-Irvine 143 UC-Santa Barbara 145 UC-San Diego 172 Cal State-Bakersfield 212 Cal State-Northridge 285 UC-Riverside 304 Cal State-Fullerton

Come back at the end of the season and see who the top team in the Big West is. Davis has no experience being a front runner with a target on its back. Let’s see how they handle the rest of the conference season. When Hawai’i isn’t beating itself, They’ve got the highest ceiling out of any team in the Big West. And they’ve proven that by sweeping 2 of the top 5 Big West teams on the road.

Nice win last night. We did to Cal Poly what we did to the Beach - impose our will on them. Just gotta keep playing at that level and we should be fine...

Very nice road win for the Wahine. Was happy to see Hakas and Bamis have great matches. Agree that they are the team to beat when playing their best.

If we could just bring our road game back to the Stan, I’d like our chances of winning the BWC title. 😉

Not having a second pin who can terminate is really hurting the Wahine. I'm not sure what Stella is really doing in the front row if she can't put some points together, they allow her to concentrate on hitting but it ain't happening

Hawai’i’s ceiling is the Big West tournament semifinals. They’ve done nothing to prove to us that they can win 3 consecutive matches without messing up 1 of those matches. They fat lady has already sung and is back in the buffet line.

They fat lady has already sung and is back in the buffet line. still possible ... even last year's hawaii team showed an inability to consistently put consecutive nights together. there was the disastrous home series losing to cp and ucsb on back to back nights ... and that was late in the season in november! and then robyn got her team to back-to-back sweeps in the bw tourney ... first exacting revenge on cp ... it helped a little that ucsb was upset by the beach in the semis ... but the tourney was on beach's home court, and the sweep of the beach in the championship final also avenged an loss earlier in the season at the beach ... so still possible ... maybe ....

All the top teams have 4 full time coaches on their benches, Nebraska has 7 additional support staff for their program. It’s a sign that our once storied program is just no longer able to compete not just on the court but off the court! I just don’t see this program becoming a top 25 program again.. sad times!

Amber and Wags aren’t on this team so it’s impossible. This year’s Bows stink.
