The rest of the article is very nice. But do coaches really make decisions about who they are going to red-shirt "in the moment" on the sidelines of a match? That sounds pretty dubious to me. (And do they make those decisions without consulting the student-athlete?)

I know coaches sometimes make decisions to "unredshirt" a player "in the moment".

I'm surprised by the coaches actions. That's pretty poor communication skills to not at the very least involve the student athlete. Not even a heads up. Just surprised given Nebraska's history of having multiple superstars on its roster. Glad that Jurevicius was able to deal with it in her own way and not ruin her freshman year.

I was walking through a tournament last year and heard a loud, distinct sound that made my head snap. It was Jurevicius hitting a jump serve. It says a lot about their other freshman to me that she isn't necessary.

The NCAA really needs to implement a policy like in football where an athlete can play x number of contests without burning their redshirt. Reye's reasoning was very sound. And in the long run Caroline may end up being extremely happy that she took that year of eligibility as a potential starter instead of mopup duty in blowouts against overmatched opponents.

In some ways, the Volleyball Day in Nebraska Stadium match was almost more of an exhibition than a regular season match. I wish for the few Huskers that didn't see the court that they'd have been able to without burning the redshirt. Maybe it was just Orr and Jurevicius? Your general rule proposal would've been perfect for that situation.

Texas had a similar situation with a walk on MB who had to play like 5 points in the tournament while Asjia mopped up a random bloody nose. Boom, an entire year of eligibility gone
