Notes about the data: -- Data is from stats.ncaa.org-- Schools are listed if they were in the Top 10 Attendance at least once from 2014- 2023 -- List is sorted by average attendance from 2014- 2023, minus 2020 & 2021. Some teams implemented maximum fan limitations during the 2021 season, and the 2020 season was cut short before some Conference matches were played (which could've increased the average attendance). I chose to remove those 2 seasons before sorting.
-- Numbers in Blue means that team's average attendance was in the Top 10 for that year -- Numbers in Yellow Highlight means that team's average attendance fell more than 20% from the previous year's average
Some observation from the data: -- There is a clear separation between Hawaii & BYU attendance and the rest of Men's VB -- Hawaii MVB's 8-yr average is higher than all Women's VB teams except for Nebraska, Wisconsin, Hawaii, & Minnesota -- BYU MVB's 8-yr average is higher than all Women's VB teams except for Nebraska, Wisconsin, Hawaii, Minnesota, & Texas

Top 15 Avg - Men and Women Combined ---edit--- I realized after posting that maybe I should align it by school year instead of straight calendar year. So women's 2023 should really compare to men's 2024
---edit 2---
Updated by school year

Encouraging. I think the best takeaway is that outside of Pepperdine and UCSD, just about all of the competitive programs showed at least a 20% rise in attendance from '22 to '23. Hopefully the unbelievable boom on the women's side bleeds over into more broadcast opportunities on the men's. The thought of the Woman's NCAA championship being on ABC 5-10 years ago would be unfathomable. Would love to see the momentum continue.

UCSB despite some solid teams a BWCT title, is nowhere on this
when in hades will they stop playing in that frggn joke of a gym? maybe it would not change attendance immediately
still, it's just mind-boggling the mentality of that program to continue to play in that sh*tsh#w of a gym, when they have a first rate facility FOR THOSE THAT ATTEND and make the experience 1st rate FOR THOSE THAT ATTEND. jeez, stop rationalizing playing in a jr high dump

Get. Over. It. That is where they choose to play. They practice there every day and choose to play their matches there. Their daily locker rooms are there. This gets rid of scheduling conflicts with basketball. Away teams don’t complain about it. I preferred Rob over a lot of the other arenas. Minus the locker rooms. Those were brutal. But seriously, you post around 5 times a year about it.

So maybe they want a smaller venue so it looks more full.
Then again from what the numbers show, the years when a team is doing good is when their attendance are high. So if they want more people to watch the game, they gotta bring in better recruits. But would the top recruits want to play for 350 people in a high school gym?

Tbh, mens programs really need to start investing in bringing out the local club teams to garner more of a fan base along with local high school teams.
I feel like Irvine does a really good job reaching out to get people to their men’s games but also Irvine as a city a snooze fest. Spotless as far as SoCal cities go, but a snoozer location nonetheless.

Totally agree, many programs are aligned with certain clubs, so it should be a natural progression to get kids out especially on weekend games (Fri/Sat). Can't do much about weekdays when kids have schoolwork and HS practice in many states. But it can't be that hard to offer $1 tickets or free tickets to your local clubs that the players work at to get people in the seats.

Thanks for sharing this. Not surprisingly, this seems to pretty directly correlate to home court advantage, with teams like Hawaii, BYU, Ball State, and Long Beach State often looking like completely different teams home vs. away. This stuff matters: for growing the game, and just straight up winning. The only reason BYU is in the conversation to make it to the tournament is because of the teams they are able to beat at home. And possibly the #1 reason Hawaii is going to make it to the tournament this year is because they're hosting the Big West championship again. It's almost unfair, but when your home court is as economical as Hawaii's is, it makes sense that they get rewarded by getting to host the tournament.

Yeah…and we still have UCI, Grand Canyon and Lewis in the Outriggers and UCSB in the BW. It will be tough to beat the 9,000 but wouldn’t be surprised if we hit 7,000-8,000 in each of these big matches.
