Is "24-year old" supposed to be the new big shade? Like that's CRAZILY old for a college student. Especially since she had extra years of eligibility due to Covid. I recall college tennis teams getting criticized for using "old" foreign players. But in those instances, the criticism was really that the players had played lower level pro tennis before NCAA tennis and were in their upper 20s. It still wasn't much of a criticism if they didn't accept prize money. But, just in comparison, O'Neal's situation is nothing like that. And,again, she's only 24 and finished with college. That's hardly unusual for college students. John Cook is just bitter his team lost and they lost to Texas of all programs. Him saying whiny things at the press conference makes my heart soar. I think he also sees the writing on the wall with the portal. He is not in the best position because this is the team he has for the next two year. Unless a stud, proven outside transfers in via portal. Which will also be another difficult situation with having both Ally and Lindsay unless one of them transfers out. There are like 5 teams that are one or two portal transfers away from being the top team next year. I am sure it’s frustrating for him. |

The comparison he’s saying is a dig at Texas. Every program uses the transfer portal and plenty examples of impact transfers at Nebraska. In fact, Nebraska had a more recent impact transfer in beason. |

my lack of grace and elegance, might be due to the fact that I have dirt for brains and you are 1000% wrong about the teams having no say as to who goes into the press conferences. End of story. At the Final Four, the coach is told which players to bring to the press conference. I guess you’d have to be there to know that. |

Nebraska has been a recruiting machine but the downside of winning basically every recruiting battle is that Nebraska more or less locked itself into a roster 6 years in advance based on the outlook of 16-year-old prospects. When they don't live up to the billing (see the 2021 class that should have been the core of this team as juniors), Cook didn't have the flexibility to dive as deep into the portal. That said, Cook's anti-portal comments ring particularly hollow because he's gone to it as much as he possibly could. With 4-year guaranteed schollies, as well as higher profile/more attention on things, it seems more difficult to free up schollies than it was a decade ago - and they do come back to bite more than they used to (see: greater publicity around Caffey/Akana stuff). There's also more depth of players now, so the players who can't crack the court at Nebraska at positions of weakness probably don't feel as confident at their prospects of landing at another elite program - may be less inclined to transfer for playing time/harder to coach out if it means a huge step down in program quality. |
