Respectfully, possible walk on? Good recruiting isn’t always obvious. (Big club etc). Sheff believes in their training and development of players. He spoke to that:
At the same time, Sheffield recognizes that determining the career path of 15 year-olds is an inexact process. He doesn’t have to look far to find a couple examples of players far surpassing expectations.
“After her sophomore year of high school nobody had Dana Rettke being a first-team All-American her freshman year,” he said. “Anybody who says that is lying. Yet, look at what she became and what she was right out of the gate.
“What about a Sarah Franklin? At this point she was so far off of everybody’s radar as a sophomore. There will be plenty of players that don’t get a phone call from us, or we have no idea who they are, that will turn into elite players.”
We can be certain they believe she can be a great D1 player.

Attitude, progress and athleticism all play a big role for Sheffield. He had to have liked what he saw of her in camps. When I think of Rettke and Hart, and possibly Shadd Ceres in the incoming class, he likes to take on athletes who maybe are not yet the polished article, but who tick all the other boxes.

Rettke was still a top 10 recruit i'm pretty sure, and Hart was a top 30-ish recruit that we didn't even go for at first, only after she drastically improved after committing to UVA? (not sure what was her original commit) and reopened her recruitment. Even Franklin was still a top-30 recruit coming into college, so none of them were exactly completely off the radar to be honest. On the other hand, this girl seems to be completely off the radar, and so she might be more raw and needs more training up. It seems like Sheff likes how his last bet on athleticism without being very polished yet went (I think Smrek is the one who fits this quite well), and is swinging for some here and there.

She sounds like a hungry kid, a workhorse, our kind of player. She sounds like a Badger.

Rettke was #8 and Hart was #17. Also, Smrek was a top recruit and had years of experience on the Canadian youth national team casual fans just didn't know about her because the usual prep agencies don't report on international players. None of these players were unknowns coming out of high school.

Well then, I guess I let the combination of her looking very lost out of the gate in her freshman year and me not following volleyball very closely back then = she was an under-the-radar player. Thanks for the correction. Still, with the scholarship limit increase coming possibly soon, maybe Sheff is more willing to take more swings.

At the same time, Sheffield recognizes that determining the career path of 15 year-olds is an inexact process. Yet, look at what she became and what she was right out of the gate. This is completely disingenuous. Nobody expects ANY freshman to be a first team All American in their collegiate debut. Also, Rettke didn't even start playing volleyball until she was 15, so people couldn't see her potential until she was a sophomore in high school anyway! Literally, a year and a half later, she was a top 10 recruit, and this was back when actual college coaches made the list, so can we stop pretending that Sheffield found some diamond in the rough player that nobody but him realized her potential? By time her 16's year was over (merely a year after she started play volleyball), she had multiple offers from elite schools - that is quite literally the definition of the collective college recruiting ranks recognizing how good a player could be.

None of these players were unknowns coming out of high school. I’m talking about when players committed, not when they entered college. Rettke was barely on the Vball radar when she committed. Virtually everyone was recruiting her for bball, not volleyball. She didn’t even start playing competitively until she was 15. Hart was a little more established, but again nowhere near a 17th ranking when she committed. Not sure why you are mentioning Smrek. I didn’t bring her up. Shadd Ceres though does kind of fit the profile - a late adopting very athletic kid.

The mere fact that Sheffield lives 2 hours away from Rettke and was one of the first to get to her when she DID decide to start playing volleyball (we know he likes to pop into high school gyms, even now when it's actually forbidden) does NOT change the fact that within a year of her actually playing (which she didn't start until she was 15), Rettke was wildly regarded as an elite prospect, despite starting at 15 - that is almost unheard of. Rettke is special, Sheffield's eye is not, lets not confuse the two. I'm also not trying to rag on the Wisconsin program during commitment week, so rather than go back and forth about this, I'll see myself out.
