Started out hot and faded late first set. Setter/hitter connection needs to be better Cleaned up second set, they have been fun to watch thus far I think this team can be good but we need better setting and better performance from the middles and the right side. I give the middles some slack because first real game they have ever played. Wilson has to be better. I hate the two hand Push.

Shoutout Lamb for a great match tonight. If we can get that from her going forward that's a huge plus.
Made way too many mistakes tonight to have a chance, but I think this team has solid potential as a whole. Really think we could've used a stud transfer middle instead of rolling with two freshmen, but hopefully they both improve as the season goes along.

I wasn't expecting a win tonight. Nebraska is the best team in the country and all of their starters from last season are back. Tall task for the first match of the season

This will not likely happen this year but do we see a chance of Thigpen ever playing all the way around??

So how are we feeling about this team's outlook this year after game one?
I feel like we could be a dangerous serve team (bad last night Ik) and our floor defense should be really good. Grome always seems to start the season slow setting and I'll continue to be worried about our middles, but if they can utilize Asia and get consistent swings from Lamb and Wilson I think our offense should be fine.

Tall task for the first match of the season They had Landfair and Blackwell on the bench. That’s how talented they are. They honestly might be the deepest team in NCAA history.

I watched the game again last night on ESPN App. I see a lot of potential and a pretty high ceiling. This is a team that is going to develop and get much better as the season goes along. They might lose all of their big non conference matches early in the season and develop into a team nobody wants to play at the end of the season. I think there is a lot there. In watching the game with my daughter she said it looks like the players are having more fun than last season. We went to a couple matches in person last season and she felt like the team didn't have great chemistry.

Mixed emotions after the Nebraska match. Saw some good things but stuff that definitely needs improvement. DeLeye is the stud we all knew she was going to be. Lamb was awesome and will need her to play like this going forward. Aside from the two outsides, there was very little offense. The commentator kept saying Grome needed to set her middles more but she wasn't getting the passes. Bultema is going to be fine. You can tell she's a competitor and fits the mold of Kentucky middles (being able to go behind the setter). I'm still not sold on Wilson. We need a rightside terminator and yes she is a big block but the connection still isn't there with Grome. Wilson is getting underset majorly. The sets are too low for her and for the outsides at times. I don't think this is a Grome issue because the staff (mostly Josephson) wants to go fast 5x. Dailey will get there - she has a high ceiling but will need more offense from her as the season goes on. I'm interested to see if Hogan or Washington get any chances.
Defense looked ok for most part. Some lapses in serve receive but will continue to get better. Serving was obviously a huge issue. Cats missed 16 serves and I get they need to serve tough but you won't win many games against top 25 teams missing that much in 4 sets.

I asked this in the game thread but it was kinda after the match. is there any world where Kentucky might run a 3MB system? Delaney Hogan is on the bench, but granted, it’s not like Grome excelled setting any of the middles, so idk if adding another to the mix would improve anything. Wilson just doesn’t seem to be the answer over there (idk how Oklahoma got so much production out of her but Kentucky can’t get any). I think the DeLeye/Lamb duo could be great though. maybe you accept the undersized block and play Lamb on the right and Thigpen on the left?? who knows. I think you’d try the 3MB system first though and really emphasize the block

Agree about Wilson on the right. I'm just not a huge fan tbh. Losing Rebo over there was a huge blow as well as Benjamin getting hurt.
I'd also give Hogan some action this weekend to see how her and Dailey compare. We have to generate some more offense in the middle and right side if they want to be a top tier team this season.
I trust Craig and Ben to get the most out of this team, but again think going forward the portal needs to be more relied on to fill out holes to win against the best.
