Some moderately informed thoughts as we head into conference play:
- I am surprised that Landfair isn't playing. I was hoping Krause would win the spot because she is Nebraska girl, had to play oppo for two years, and was injured last year. But, when I first saw Krause on court, I assumed she would have short leash and be subbed out like she and Batenhorst were. Instead Cook seemingly only plans to use her when starters need a rest at end of set we are losing badly. If we pass well enough that Bergen can continue to spread the offense around, I would bet she continues to ride the bench.
- The absolute highlight of this team so far is Andi Jackson. Love that Bergen has set her quite far off the net. There were a couple sets/kills in transition that had me on my feet. Will try to pay closer attention to her blocking and whether her reads have improved.
- Was worried about Beason's slow start because she struggled in the natty (like the whole team so whatever) but also the final four match iirc. She seems to be returning to form. I still agree with decision to DS her because both Mauch and Choboy are too good to sit.
-Was most stressed by serving to start the year but, acknowledging recency bias, that looks to be greatly improving. Another reason Krause has to play. I think it might have been because of injury, but Maisie served for Jackson against Louisville instead of Orr. Orr's errors are too high for pressure she is putting, and honestly I'd like to see Jackson develop her serve (and floor d!). But if it's about getting a senior who has had a lot of tribulations and choose not to transfer on the court, not pressed about it.
While SMU game gave me unwelcome flashbacks to the Texas S/P disaster, we just swept two top 5 teams, and are hitting .300 on the season. GBR!

RS- Landfair? Is that a real possibility? It is I guess? I thought landfair did NOT want to play right side though I may be misremembering but I thought it was a thing at Minnesota if she wants her NIL money, she'll do whatever JCook wants.

Speaking of next season, I heard last week that Cook is looking at raising the scholarship count to 16 next year to ensure all players are on scholarship and open the door for more players to come to Nebraska. I admit I was disappointed to hear Cook say Nebraska likely won’t travel far during the few matches they play away from the Bob during the preseason, especially since he made it seem like Nebraska couldn’t afford it with the added travel costs of going to LA or Seattle/Eugene each B1G season (or when he claimed all sushi in Palo Alto costs as much as Nobu lol). But hearing how Nebraska will fund more education, provide more stipends, and give more prospects the opportunity to compete, develop, and train in one of the toughest gyms in D1 was certainly nice to hear! I thought the roster/scholarship limits were increasing to 18… could obviously be misremembering.

This seems unnecessary. By all accounts she's being a good teammate, doing well on the playing time she's had and will likely have some moments of saving our butts this year when her number is called.

If so, someone should call tomorrow and ask if the plan is to eventually get to 18, and if so, when?

I am sure she is and she seems MUCH happier there. But that doesn't change the biggest reason she chose Nebraska. If JCook wants her to play RS, she will.

If JCook wants her to play RS, she will. I wouldn’t be so sure. She’s had nothing but glowing things to say about Hugh Mccutcheon and was adamantly opposed to being an opp when what to do with the trio of her Wenaas and wucherer was being decided by her “dream coach” Maybe she’s changed her mind but the idea of playing opp is something she was previously not okay with

Inquiring minds… etc, etc. There’s no plan to use 18 roster spots. Keeping 14 happy is hard. Plus the extra expenses to the bottom line of an athlete whether they are on scholarship or not. 16 seems plenty of depth. Our current configuration plus another middle another setter/opposite.

And in the revenue sharing world, there will likely be battles within the Ath. Dept. on scholarships, as the university will be hard pressed to fund every sport up to their roster limit.

So much for what happens in the locker room stays in the locker room, Maisie.
