Haven’t watched many Iowa matches since the Buzzerio days, but I was loving the fight that the team showed this weekend. Malu Garcia was so fun to watch against Rutgers. She’s got that competitive edge and fiery way about her! Glad you watched! Yes, the team did show great fight this weekend. I will say that has not been there consistently this season thus far, but definitely is showing up now., which is great. I give much of that credit to Deery. She is proving to be a difference-maker, both with her play and her on-court demeanor. And you are absolutely correct about Malu Garcia...she is a special player and so fun to watch. And for the Hawks to be doing well after losing Ammeraal to injury...impressive on the part of first-year Meitzler to step in and step up as she has! I do think harsh B1G reality will hit soon, but sure doesn't hurt to enjoy a weekend of two B1G wins for the first time in a loooong time. And for what it's worth, I loved the Buzzerio days! Both Meghan and Courtney made a difference while at Iowa. GO HAWKS!

I’ve tried for 22 years to be an Iowa fan. They’re just not going to get better until they hire a decent human who is also a decent coach to lead the program. Jim Barnes peaked at Tulane; nothing going beyond a good transfer setter (that he didn’t actually recruit) on his team right now. Not to shabby for a player who has "nothing going," I'd say. Congratulations, Malu! Well-deserved. Cannot wait to watch you continue to shine and to grow as a Hawkeye!

Malu is going to be great! I do really enjoy watching her. I didn't know that much about her yet a month ago when I made that comment.

This is the second post lashing back at people who do not agree with you it is childish and certainly not the Iowa nice I would hope we all show to everyone.

Lol. Those people were NOT "not agreeing," they were talking trash, and hawkfan was rightfully responding.

This is the second post lashing back at people who do not agree with you it is childish and certainly not the Iowa nice I would hope we all show to everyone. I saw both of these as appropriate, given the overarching vitriol with which both of these posters (see their other related posts along with the ones I quoted) displayed towards the program and more importantly, towards our dedicated student athletes. You don't find this poster's comments (along with many others from them at that time) as being demeaning towards Malu and her other teammates? I do and that is not ok in my book. They work way too hard to be demeaned. I don't consider quoting someone's very apparent ill-intended comments as "lashing out," but rather to prompt thought before they choose to do something similar going forward...about the Iowa program and student athletes or any program and their athletes/staff. So, we definitely differ as it relates to that but I respect your opinion. Feel free to send me a private message if you would like to discuss further...happy to do so.

Congrats, Hawks! 3-0 sweep of Rutgers. Urquhart is truly showing up when this team has needed her. Impressive. And team already has more wins on season (9) than they had all season last year. Blocking has improved and is making a difference. We have been so lacking in that area these past couple of seasons. Keep things rolling and improving, Hawks!

Great to see a conference sweep! Passing is so much better this year—Galles has really made this team better. Have to also give a tip of the cap to Meitzler. She has impressed as a freshman setter covering for Ammeraal.

I was at the match against Rutgers. I would say the Hawks have the raw talent to be a middle-of-the-pack Big Ten team, but don't yet have the needed consistency. They got away with it against Rutgers, but they'll need to tighten things up to keep progressing. Nice to see progress, though!

Hawks played like a young team on the road tonight at Northwestern. Very sloppy—especially early.

IMO Coach Barnes is making obvious strides at IA, and their strength is in the Freshman he recruited. Now do I get chided for my opinion that differs from others? If so, Oh Well.

Most consistent bright spot match-in and match-out continues to be Gracie Gibson. Both IA and NWern are both young teams. Expect inconsistent play. I thought NW had a good game for them, especially at the service line ( or was that IA breakdowns?), which took IA out of sets 1 and 2. IA did not play up to their potential. They did show grit in bouncing back in sets 3 & 4. IMO Coach Barnes is figuring out what is needed in the B1G. He has IA players motivated and improving. Playing hard even in losing matches, no quit. He had a big job moving IA out of the basement of the B1G. So far in 24, IA appears to be climbing some steps in that regard. Last night not, but interesting to see what the rest of the season holds. Was really impressed with freshman Garcia and Phills last. Seems IA's future 25-27, maybe looking up. GO HAWKS!
