Some initial impressions of Team 52 after today's Maize/Blue scrimmage: - Several freshmen are going to be competing for playing time this season. Hanes at Middle, Demetrician at OH and McMillan at DS/L were especially impressive and will be putting heat on the veterans. - Burke looked solid and in control running the Blue team - Vaulet took a bit to warm up today but once she did she started firing. Very consistent with her jump serve which was one of the team's biggest weapons last year. She played both left side and opposite today and could be used in either spot this season. - Blue team won 3-1 and pretty much dominated most of the match. I didn't think the squads were separated A/B but Blue certainly played like the A team: Burke, Hanes/Boney Demetrician/Reaugh, Vaulet, Cuchran, McMillan. Much of that was tied to Burke as the experienced setter on the floor. - The AU scoring system was used to keep track of individual players as a fun kind of twist to the scrimmage. Burke led the way but the freshmen Demetrician and Hanes were not far behind! The freshmen looked great and give me hope for the program moving forward. They will get a real test next weekend in an exhibition match against Pitt. Go Blue! Jacobs wasn’t A team? I don't think they really spit the teams A/B, as Nyambio played on the Maize squad with Jacobs also. Jacobs struggled a bit offensively but she also had two freshmen setters on her side. She honestly could start at libero if Virtue needs her there, she's very versatile and the vocal leader on the floor. After today this is what I anticipate the starting lineup to look like: Burke (S); Boney/Nyambio (MB); Jacobs/Reaugh (OH); Vaulet (OPP); McMillan (DS); Cuchran (L). Demetrician and Hanes made some statements today though and could easily be called upon if the starters struggle.

Having always been an rather unsophisticated, "watch the ball" kind of fan, I decided to start focusing on McMillan at some point in the third set, for a change, and was quickly mesmerized. It's absolutely incredible how deftly she maneuvers herself amongst the trees to get in position.

Some of my thoughts from watching the maize/blue scrimmage. I was impressed with the freshmen, especially considering this was a week earlier than we'd normally see them with next week being the Pitt exhibition. They seemed confident and steady. It was nice to see Allison just plain bounce a couple of balls. One particular back row swing from a nice set from Ellie was impressive. I thought Morgan led the blue side nicely. Always fun to watch Val bomb her serve. Trixie was solid at DS and has a sneaky serve, but I thought she particularly excelled at right back. Oddly specific thing that impressed me - when Jenna was backrow as the serving middle, she stepped in and set a good ball whenever Morgan defended the first contact.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how they match up against a legit national title contender next Saturday against Pitt. Mostly, it was just great to be back in Ann Arbor watching and cheering for the Maize and Blue.

Allison Jacobs, Serena Nyambio and Morgan Burke joined the MiSHEgan podcast crew for an insightful look into the early days of the 2024 season. Maybe the biggest news coming out of this: Jacobs has a 6th year of eligibility and is likely sticking around. Worth a listen.

Did Pitt mostly play their starters or their bench? Either way, seems like a strong result for Michigan going into the season.
