If larson and cook are both locked. Does it make sense to bring plummer, lanier frantti and avery on week2? Hehe that will be fun! And i know the passing will be very bad but against poland and turkey will be fun.

Sheer curiosity, what’s the point in bringing Carlini week 2 if they need to work on Hancock’s and Poulter’s connections for Paris? I’m weak I legit meant this and was curious. Poulter did not look good. She looked horrible in fact in almost ever aspect on top of being slow and poor decision making. I am very concerned of what the plan is here. We went from being one of the strongest nations in this position to not that at all.

She hasn’t played a competitive match in 1.5 years. I think a lot of us were pretty pleased she looked as good as she did. I do hope she gets more matches under her belt bc she needs the gametime decision making reps. But I definitely feel like she could get there. I am curious to see how Hancock connects with everyone

The only issue I had was she was slow getting to some balls. Her location looked pretty good and the speed was there on the sets.

I didn’t think either setter looked great, but I still think Poulter looked better than Carlini. I will be shocked/disappointed if the setters in Paris are not Poulter/Hancock. They give us our best chances to win.

Sooooo what are your thoughts about VNL week 1 for the USA? To me, the biggest issue is at setting. Carlini had poor location all around, and Poulter struggled OOS and also had poor location to the middle/right. I haven't looked at stats across all matches, but I'd bet our middle/RS efficiency is very weak. RS was a waste of an exercise. Cuttino had probably her best showing, and she's still clearly not what USA needs. SWP did not look comfortable in the role, tipping a majority of her attempts. M. Skinner was the only interesting experiment, but she's probably too green for Paris. Larson and A. Skinner both looked pretty good. Larson's passing was a bit worse than before, but I'm willing to chalk that up to variance and/or rustiness. Her offensive arsenal was impressive. Skinner is just an entertaining player to watch with a heavy swing and a lot of range. JWO looked great on serve receive, and I'm still reserving judgment on defense. Her coverage was great, as usual.

Some of these takes…
Poulter looked way better than expected for not playing in what.. 18 months? Was she good, no. Was she bad.. no. Poulter is slow at times but then I saw her chase down some balls where she didn’t so maybe it’s more mental for her right now as she gets matches under her belt. She started off strong against Thailand streaking the middle.. something everyone knows is the key but then that went away as the matches progressed.
Speaking of mental, I believe that to be Lauren’s issue during China match. Lauren was considerably better last year.. even injured when she replaced Hancock towards the end of the vnl. But last year she wasn’t pressured like she is now. I bet she’s feeling like, this is Deja vu. Not sure anyone expected China to be that good. Their block and middles were wild that match.
Carlini looked great in the dub sub roll but pretty mediocre against China at times even though set 1-3 could have gone either way.
Her defense was spectacular and changed plays that Poulter is losing right now.
Part of the problem for both setters was the opposite situation. Cuttino clearly made both players question their sets to the right or well, anywhere she was. You could see both setters sometimes actively avoiding her. She missed so many routes it’s unforgivable. Skinner was good against Thailand as well as when she was used in dub sub situations. You could see how much pressure was taken off both setters when they felt comfortable with some sort of consistency with Madi.
Someone like Drews would have provided some major consistency, confidence with both setters and likely would have helped with wins over China and maybe Brazil.

The setting looked terrible from both for me. How are you going to be able to use players like Plummer with a set that’s 2 inches above the net. Just felt like both were trying to set at Mach speed and way too low (and inside consistently). Works for some players (Larson, A Skinner), but will keep our biggest hitters on the bench I fear. I guess we’ll see in week 2.

What will happen to this board if KP doesn’t make the Olympic roster Unless she completely blows VNL, the last spot aside from KRC, JL, and her is Skinner/Frantti… I’d bring Skinner. She’s a good passer and has good offense. Frantti can be a spark plug though.

What will happen to this board if KP doesn’t make the Olympic roster I’m more sure of her making it this year than any other year. Especially with how frantii and skinner played this week against the real teams. Yes, I don’t think Thailand and DR are real teams. Plummers floor is like 40% kills and she will either go off against turkey or Poland and that will be enough
