Actually, bigfan, you want to know how bad it is/was at BYU? Steve Cleveland, BYU's men's basketball coach, left for the same job at Fresno State. It's the first time EVER a head coach at BYU has left for the same job at another school. How bad is the atmosphere at the athletic department at BYU for him to go to Fresno State? Pretty bad. Things have not settled down with a new AD and women's volleyball coach? The new AD will have his hands full with a variety of allegations and NCAA investigations from the previous regime. The volleyball team is now 2-11. Ruben Nieves has a big task ahead of him to get the talent needed to turn the ship around. One little thing though. I found out from a reliable source that Ruben Nieves had moved to the Fresno area long before there was any indication that the FSU head coaching job might be available. At the time of his hire, I looked up his contact info at the Positive Coaching Alliance, and the phone number was in the Fresno area code. I believe his job was mainly as a traveling training advisor and to provide some Spanish language translations, which he could do from an office in Fresno.

Are there similiar situations in other departments. Are many athletic departments adrift morally, spiritually and politically? I do not hear or smell any whiff of scandal from the Cal athletic dept.

I do not hear or smell any whiff of scandal from the Cal athletic dept. Nothing serious since Todd "Bozo" Bozeman. There were also a couple of football players who apparently didn't attend a certain class, but that seemed to be more a professor's oversight without any favoritism to the athletic dept. But who knows what goes on that we don't know about. UCLA seemed to dodge every bullet in the 90's. You know - Baron Davis's sister buying Harrick's Chevy Blazer at below market price and the softball shenanigans. One former professor (from a prestiguous private instituion with many fans here) told me about his situation with the athletic dept. A baseball player never showed up for classes and didn't take a single test. It was strongly suggested that this student-athlete be awarded a "B" in the class. Fresno State had recruiting problems with former basketball coach Ray Lopes. He also lured a former protege of his at Cal (Shantay Legans). Oh no! I'm hijacking a thread!!!

I missed more than my share of classes during college, but I realize it's different for a student-athlete who has to comply with all sorts of team rules and NCAA regs concerning conduct. But when I missed more than a week's worth of class, I'd get nervous because I was afraid the prof said something important for an exam.
All of my nightmares revolve around me missing class and showing up for an exam I didn't prepare for. I kid you not. All of my nightmares...

My biggest nightmare from college was when I announced to my bio-chemistry professor in front of the entire class that it was easy to cheat on her exams; she made everyone bring picture identification ( passport or driver's license) to the rest of our mid-terms and final. She thought imposter's could show up and take the tests. The nightmare was the ENTIRE CLASS wanted to kill me; the second thing was the professor made me take the test's from her desk in front of the entire class. Don't get me started on the drug testing................

What does one do as a "Traveling training advisor?" I kind of mixed up my terms. I was thinking of a "roving hitting instructor" after the A's hitting coach just got fired yesterday and kind of added to what I remember about Ruben's title. I looked it up. Ruben's official title at the PCA was "Manager of Trainer Development".

I think Nieves was about the last man standing during the coaching search. Their first choice was Charlie Wade, but I have a feeling that he saw the job as a career dead ender, especially as he aspires to be head coach at Hawaii someday. Then they went to John Stevenson, but he took the Cal-Poly job instead. The school was basically left with their 3rd choice. In all honestly Fresno just isn't one of the more attractive jobs out there at this time.

Fresno State may have been the only position he would have considered.
