I am surprised that not many people talking about Kahale Clini. I thought he was very highly recruited out of HS. I watched Clini's high school matches last year and he's good, but I have to agree with sydneyoperahouse that he still needs a lot of work. He has a heavy arm, but his shot selection needs to improve. Quite a few times he got caught trying to just power through the block and it came back right down. Footwork is a bit slow which I'm sure the coaching staff was working on this year. He does have a strong serve though so if outside is not an option maybe serving specialist could be his route.

With Genis confirmed to be graduating this year and not returning next year (source: http://instagram.com/p/C5jiMmsS0M_ Setter: Rowan and ?/Taliaferro - Wouldn't shock me if UCLA looks for another grad transfer at setter but with Taliaferro being a son I think they probably believe he's pretty ready to backup (although I know some on this platform aren't super high on his ability). No real downgrade here from 2024. MB: McQuiggan and Wong-Diallo/Hersh - McQuiggan's breakout season is huge given Genis' departure. Hersh's injury this year has made it hard to evaluate how the coaching staff feels about him, but I suspect it'll be a fall competition/rotation for the MB2 spot. Big downgrade here from 2024 with loss of McHenry especially. Opp: David and Decker - Assuming David returns (he's a true junior so I think he will?) He'll be the almost certain starter. Decker hasn't gotten many opportunities but he's a big lefty so who knows. Marek Turner is the Opp to know who is committed, he played on the last U19 USA team. Medium downgrade from 2024 without Sloane option. OH: Robinson/Rama and Curci/Kelly - feels like these four names will be the outside rotation next year, Robinson and Rama likely getting the majority of minutes with Curci being a defensive-minded option and Kelly being a fun freshman option. Not much concern for me here from 2024 other than the same passing issues that have shown up this year. Lib: /Aziz/McDonough/ - Heck I don't even know who is going to start for UCLA at libero in a few weeks from now! But Aziz has played well in his opportunities this year I guess, Knight and Champlin won't be options, Nakamura obviously hasn't worked out, no libero commit coming in 2024, Curci seems to be considered an OH, so like yeah hmm. I don't really know what to say someone is gonna have to step up here at some point. Medium downgrade from 2024 due to no Knight/Champlin option for emergencies Overall the loss of McHenry, Champlin, Knight, Genis and maybe Sloane will hit UCLA hard, especially the first two names. UCLA will have to get a bounce-back 2025 from David, an emergence of a 2nd MB, and figure out the libero spot to make up. UCLA's starting 7 of Rowan, McQuiggan, Wong-Diallo, David, Robinson, Rama, and McDonough is still MPSF champ worthy in my opinion, and the OH's will likely be the stars of this team along with Rowan. Can't forget Caleb Sapp in that opposite room (Balboa bay 18s). Big time blocker at 6'8/6'9. Not as offensive as Marek, but could very well see him turning into a grant sloane type player in the future. Yes I could see Sapp contributing as a big block at opp down the road.

I’m bummed that Sloane isn’t returning, because he’s a redshirt junior right? He would be big for UCLA next year That is an assumption I'm currently making based on a variety of thoughts but no inside knowledge. I actually saw him on campus today, should've asked him. Senior post on instagram is up for Sloane, marking me correct once again!

Not to make this about other teams, but looks like this is an interesting year with a lot of losses of big impact players to graduation for top teams: - LBSU: Briggs, Torwie, Godbold, Knipe, Harlan - UCLA: McHenry, Champlin, Knight, Genis, Sloane - Hawaii: Chakas, Voss, Todd, Galloway
And teams like Stanford lose almost their entire starting line-up: Rottman, Lietzke, Hill, Gates, Lamp, and Turner
Pretty exciting to get to see new faces and looks for teams next year!

I was actually thinking of making a 2024 graduating class thread because of this. haha For UCI: Power, Sheward, Tangutur, Campbell, Karlous? A lot of teams are losing their big pieces.

Speraw is not opposed to starting freshman. Alex Knight, Cole Ket and Mads Jensen all started their freshman year.

I love Wong-Diallo upside. Curious as to why they burned his redshirt for no apparent reason. Super raw talent with a huge ceiling. Why would you not want him around for 4 more years if he wasn’t in your plans this season? Didn't he take a gap year, I think he graduated HS in 2022 so didn't 2023 count as his red sirt year. I actually don't know the rule but always thought you had 5 years to complete 4 years of eligibility after HS graduation.

I can't speak to his High School play, but I know he was playing 18U club last season. Not sure if he ever played HS volleyball as he was a bball player until last year. Kind of why I don't understand not red-shirting if it was an option. The kid is that talented and he's still just learning the game.

Your eligibility starts when you enroll in college, not when you graduate high school. That is not how I read the NCAA D1 and D2 rules last time I looked. Maybe it has changed. The are several experts on here that will know the correct answer... maybe you are correct but I thought the clock started after highschool graduation and either the athlete enroll in college or 12 months have passed.
