MIT losing hurt the NEWMAC more than the Smith win helped. NCAA has updated the NPI numbers. NCAA NPIA) The team Babson played once beat the team Babson played twice, but with so many common matches, I'm surprised it's that significant a change that it helps a team from another part of the country with few if any common opponents. B) MIT has one loss, Hopkins has two, including to MIT, and Hopkins jumps MIT for the 2 seed? I'll have to look but I thought MIT played a pretty good schedule - was Hopkins really that much stronger? Although I guess we've seen where losing to Juniata isn't really losing to the NPI.

I made a mock bracket, put teams within their NPI band of 8 and then moved around for reducing flights where possible. The committee will probably emphasize the cost savings and de-emphasize the bands.
R1: Juniata, Ithaca, F&M, Stevens, Springfield, Allegheny, Ohio Wesleyan, Marymount
R2: Hopkins, Trinity, Whitworth, CMS, Gallaudet, William Paterson, Fisher, John Jay
R3: MIT, Colby, Smith, Cortland, Middlebury, Endicott, UMass Dartmouth, Maine Maritime
R4: Emory, ETBU, CNU, Virginia Wesleyan, Centre, Lasell, Berry, Covenant
R5: Hope, Marietta, CWRU, Otterbein, William Smith, Edgewood, Dubuque, PSU Altoona
R6: W&L, Gettysburg, Salisbury, NYU, Transylvania, Messiah, Southern Virginia, Manhattanville
R7: Whitewater, Millikin, Platteville, Chicago, Stevens Point, Illinois Wesleyan, Cornell College, Greenville
R8: Oshkosh, Wash U, La Verne, Eau Claire, Carnegie Mellon, UNW, Saint Benedict, Bridgewater State

La Verne got sent to Oshkosh last year. I don't know of any policy against that but I hope they get to have a different experience this year. Transy can drive to Atlanta, allowing Lasell to drive somewhere, saving the flight to Atlanta. Trying to figure out how to save the Bridgewater flight, but anyway I see to do that leaves a Wisconsin regional stacked.

Babson has played 19 NCAA matches in the last 8 tournaments including a finals appearance. They are out but conference mate Smith, who it looks like has played 5 conference playoff matches in 20 years just won the league and is returning to the dance.
Comparing Smith's 5 conference playoff matches, Calvin has played in 6 NCAA title games in the same number of years... after 20 appearances in a row with 3 national titles and 3 other finals appearances, they will not be participating.
Wesleyan has played 16 NCAA tournament games in 6 years including a finals appearance. Conference rival Tufts has made 6 of the last 7 tournaments including the Elite 8 2x, but they don't make it. Instead, Colby is a top 20 team and will get a Pool C bid - freaking Colby?!?
Marietta, won just 5 matches in 2021, nearly went undefeated and will get a Pool C to earn their first appearance ever. William Smith just started their program in 2022 and they also earn a Pool C bid. William Paterson and Allegheny each make the dance by winning their first respective titles since 1991! UMass Dartmouth is making their second straight trip to the NCAA tournament and 2nd appearance ever after completing just their 5th season with a .700+ winning percentage in over 50 years of volleyball. John Jay was 0-38 vs Hunter College, having played annually since 1994, and finally broke through vs the Hawks to punch their ticket to the dance.
I get that stories like this happen every year but I don't recall stories this dramatic and not so many of them in one year. Combine that with the teams who didn't make it and the NPI era arrives with a very different feel to it, no doubt.
Looking forward to a great event! Congrats to all who are going dancing!

Oshkosh and W&L not hosting; Marietta and CNU hosting in their spots. Probably didn't need two Wisconsin regions, but I have to guess Washington & Lee just declined the hosting opportunity.
