I am not familiar with other Cuban teams. Which are you referring to? On a general note, I don't think anyone can predict what a bureaucrat in a totalitarian regime is going to do next. That Cuban team that came out of nowhere to make it to the quarters of the Rio Olympics comes to mind. Pretty much quit the sport after that. I agree, the sky’s the limit for these guys. They’ll go as far as the Cuban government allows them to. That team had a similar setup with a taller defender who turns out to be Diaz’s older brother. They had potential and disappeared.

for the multiple people saying Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzales disappeared after the 2016 Olympics, just check bvbinfo.com... They played 7 events in 2017 including the WCH in Vienna. They played 8 more events in 2018, actually beat Mol/Sorum in Ostrava 2018 pool play two events before Norway started their big run. So they didn't exactly disappear.
I heard from a Cuban who is well informed that Alayo/Diaz will go play indoor for money, that was about a month ago. Maybe things change based on the recent results and like other people said, their situation with the federation is probably the least predictable thing.

I believe I recall that Nivaldo and Sergio also ultimately left the beach to play indoor. Perhaps not immediately after Rio though, as pointed out. I don’t imagine Cuba has much of a training infrastructure for high level beach players, and it seems unlikely that the Cuban government would ever allow its beach players to train elsewhere on a regular basis. Not sure what their indoor training situation is but Cuba does seem to have a bit more international success at the indoor game.

Cubas are not signed up for Brasilia or Espinho. They are signed up for China and if we count in Norceca Finals that will be 12 tournaments. I think their government does not fund them after a certain number of tournaments (similar to USAV only providing funds for 10 tournaments in one season). I wonder if they even get to keep any of their earnings. I doubt they will go to Poland or Ostrava since they don’t do Espinho either.

I asked Diaz and they were looking to play a few more tournaments but had to wait for confirmation. Maybe they will or won’t. As long as they get the 12. But their growth recently would make sence they get some solid E16’s under their belt. If they want to give them a better prep and long shot but still a shot at a medal.

I had not realized what a really big vertical Hellvig has. He plays 3-4" higher than his actual length. Just great hops for a guy who looks 13.

I actually love the Cuba medaled here. Those two are playing an honest game and are just casually giving it a go against the best teams in the world.

i can't remember. I'm not sure if they reimburse airfare for more than Top3. However, even if a team provisionally qualifies for airfare reimbursement, if they don't advance out of Qualis, they are out of luck . For Xiamen, USA4 is in Main Draw, so no issue about Qualis. But they're USA4/
Maybe Seaiaen can chime in.
seaincook how does the USAV reimbursement for travel/hotels/entry work? I don’t know as I’m not part of the setup. Sorry!

well, Mudinger digging themselves a deeper hole. Not that Treo will likely get out of Pool, and neither gain anything in Tepic, but Mudinger failing to beat the Grimalts... that's kinda embarrassing. Losing to the Grimalts who just won the Xiamen challenge, how embarrassing!
