Kind of funny how all the teams that have gotten busted for spying have gone on to perform well afterward:
-2007 Patriots go 18-0 before losing in the Super Bowl to the New York Giants, who are all national heroes for their service -Michigan goes undefeated en route to the national title -Canada 2-0 since they got caught red-handed with a drone

LFG Canada!!! I'm biased but I think the punishment was excessive. I hope we make it through. Every country in the world cheats (in soccer), and they've also admitted it. We're just stupid enough to get caught.

Japan defeated Nigeria 3-1, and Spain beat Brazil 2-0 after Marta got a red card right before halftime. Both are through to the quarterfinals.

Not the way I wanted to see Marta finish her international career, but that was definitely a red. She was so upset, even a couple of Spanish players consoling her before she walked off.

Yeah, I mean she high kicked the Spanish player in the head. Not intentional, but still an obvious red card.

Also, absolutely brutal draw for Nigeria to end up in the same group as Spain, Japan and Brazil.

Yeah, I mean she high kicked the Spanish player in the head. Not intentional, but still an obvious red card. The game also had a ridiculous number of injuries and players hobbling around. Brazil's keeper was down multiple times (surprised she wasn't subbed off), Spain had to sub off their keeper (Cata Coll took a knee to the face), and there were 15 or 16 minutes announced for stoppage time in the second half. Spain's last goal was scored in the 17th minute of added time.

I haven't followed women's soccer in a hot minute, but right now who are the favorites for gold/medaling? Japan seems like a brutal matchup for the US in the QFs

I haven't followed women's soccer in a hot minute, but right now who are the favorites for gold/medaling? Japan seems like a brutal matchup for the US in the QFs Spain is the reigning World Cup champion and ranked No. 1 in the world. They went 3-0 in their group including a 2-1 win over Japan. That said, Japan is the kind of team you'd hope to face in the semifinal or later. Unfortunate that either Japan or USA will be out, as both are good enough to make the final. I'll have to look at the odds once the quarterfinals are set, but USA was the pre-tournament favorite (+175) at DraftKings, narrowly over Spain (+200).

Japan seems like a brutal matchup for the US in the QFs USA has looked surprisingly good; their front 3 are very dangerous. Previous versions of Japan were better. This Japanese team is a good matchup for USA. I don't think they will pose a big threat for USA.

Last two matches end with France over NZ 2-1, and Canada over Colombia 1-0. Canada end up second in their group despite the -6 from the drone debacle.
