Because there’s no real mandated minimum number of matches, but there is a maximum. At the end it’s about personal philosophy.

Most programs/coaches are going to insist on maximizing match reps. It’s counter intuitive to limit those.

There’s also a need at some programs to maximize home contests. Especially at places like Nebraska and Wisconsin.

There’s a lot of speculation regarding why Elliott limits the amount of matches Texas plays per season. When other programs follow suit - especially Rice and A&M that have some kind of relationship with Elliott and so are almost certainly being influenced by his philosophy- part of it has to be because Texas has been extraordinarily successful this way.

The main theory I see put forward is to limit the physical stress on players. While I agree it’s a factor, the limit is inherently only on non conference, since league matches are mandated by the conference office. So late in the season when it would be most beneficial getting ready for the tournament, it’s not applicable in most cases.

I think the bigger factor is gaming RPI. Texas isn’t going to schedule filler simply to get to the maximum number of matches. Really good programs don’t always want to put another likely loss on their record by scheduling Texas. Texas doesn’t really want to travel unless it’s quid pro quo in some way, so programs are going to have to head to Gregory which they very rarely want to do so Elliott looks to schedule to maximize his RPI bonuses, and one of the key strategies he uses to ensure that is fewer matches overall.

I think it’s fair to question whether this is the right outlook or not. Texas has played way fewer matches than anyone else for years. But after back to back national championships the amount of second guessing surrounding Elliott’s coaching decisions have diminished precipitously. Including from us Texas fans, who selfishly want an opportunity to see the team more. But if our sacrifice means more national championships, I guess we’ll just have to figure out a way to suffer through it. Alas.

Historically JE has scheduled fewer matches than most Top 20 programs.  He's really vocal about giving players physical/mental rest and (if possible) an off week so that they can go home and see family etc

Missed the deadline for getting in the annual CK Purdue prediction ☹️ but noticed all 4 Boilermaker predictors had 30 match total schedules. 😳 My count on the printable schedule is 31 matches (11 non con + 20 B1G)  😁 and would be hoping for 26-5 record if more timely. 😂 Regardless let’s really Boiler Up in 2024 💛🚂🏐
