I know I will probably be jumped on for saying this, but my first reaction was "Who?".
Strangely, that was second, third and fourth reactions too.

This will be a questionable hire for UOP, Kathy over recommended him she must want him out at UCSB. Just last season she told him it was do or die.

Interesting posts on the Big West WVB Twitter account. "BigWestWVB Wow... just found out who the new #Pacific WVB coach is gonna be." "BigWestWVB Missed this, but it's very interesting, given they didn't have a coach at the time: #Pacific signs 3 for 2010-11... bit.ly/amYfZr" "BigWestWVB So the story on the #Pacific recruits is that they committed to the last staff, so it looks like the new coach will have his work cut out." I think the last phrase is an understatement.

Are you kidding? He played a major part in the success of that team and Kathy wanted him to stay, but knows this is a great opportunity for him. You have to love the rumors that go around. Just talk to the girls he is leaving behind because they were very broken up when they announced it today.

Huh.
Do Big West coaches know what is happening everywhere else in the country? Reading their press releases, I am doubtful.

"Gibbons is a 1997 graduate of Iowa State University where he earned a B.S. in psychology and in 2009 earned his Master's degree in adult education from the University of Phoenix. At Iowa State he played on the Cyclones' club volleyball team that finished ranked 16th, seventh and third in 1995, 1996 and 1997. "
Well, as a graduate of ISU and former player on the club volleyball team there, I take back my "Who?".

Going from Santa Barbara to Stockton is going to be shocking. Median home sale price in Santa Barbara is $673,372, in Stockton it's $125,000.

It won't be any surprise, he has been coaching in the Big West a while now. This is a really good chance for him, he would have been crazy to turn it down.

I wonder if this means he knows he wasn't going to get the UCSB job when Kathy retired? This is the reason a lot of long-term assistants stay with their programs. It's why Charlie Wade was at Hawaii so long, why Kim stayed at UCLA, part of the reason Tim Jensen didn't leave Pepperdine when LMU came calling earlier this month and more than likely the reason Nick Cheronis is still at Florida. Now, clearly this didn't work out for all those I mentioned (and many more I didn't list), but I believe everyone knows what I'm driving at here. So to the Santa Barbara fans, what do you think? Did Greg leave because he wasn't going to get his head coaching opportunity there any time soon? In any respect, he'll clearly be familiar with the conference and might just have a little extra motivation when UOP plays UCSB next year!
