Just saw this in another thread...they also needed 5 to beat Iowa last night, and these were both at home. And they get Nebraska next weekend.
Tough starts for ISU, Illinois and Purdue, three teams with big hopes this season...

I'm surprised ISU is struggling so much this season. I'm not really sure what is going on. On paper they look like a good team. Hahn is one of the best liberos around, the setter Landwehr is an AA from last season, they return Victoria Hurtt and Rachel Hockaday on the OH, and both middles are back, Straube and Matlock. The only question mark for me going into the season was the OPP which has been filled by FR Bigbee who has turned out to be their best hitter so far with 3.34 k/s and .281 hitting percentage. In the Syracuse match Straube hit negative and Matlock hit .167. I don't know what the solution is for ISU. On the season, both OH's are hitting below .200. That's not going to get it done. They need someone to step up and be the clutch hitter that Jensen was last year and Victoria Henson was two seasons ago.

It will be interesting to see how the Cyclones react to the tough weekend. It is a testament to where Christy has taken the program that I can't really remember too many times when the Cyclones were struggling to the degree which they are currently, so this may be a new situation for everyone there. I have to think they will find some answers, though, since there is still a lot of talent. It has often been the case that Christy's teams are better than they look on paper, so it is kind of strange that the opposite may be true at this point.

ISU not only lost Jenson but they also lost a lot of senior leadership. The 4 seniors that graduated were very outgoing and provided leadership on and off the court. The glue is gone but I am sure Christy will find a way before the season ends.

They'll probably play out of their minds against Nebraska next Saturday.

They'll probably play out of their minds against Nebraska next Saturday. With CJ a former player for Nebraska & with 3 players from Nebraska you are probably right!

That stuff works against teams as much as it does for them. ISU has way bigger fish to fry on their own side of the net. Syracuse will be top 25 within two years.

"Syracuse top 25 in next 2 years" Is that based on good young recruits, good coach or just intuition?

Based on great coaching and the certainty that he will bring in several international kids who can flat out play. No intuition, rather proven history.

I'd say it's based on having the guy who was C-USA Coach of the Decade, won a DII championship, got Louisville into the top 10, and has a better international pipeline than pretty much anyone else out there. Somehow, I think Leonid is still underrated. They're going to get REALLY good at Syracuse.

I was thinking it's pretty hard to get kids to buy into winters in upstate new york. I guess they're able to do it in other sports (men's, women's lacrosse). I didn't think about international students. Of course you just say "New York" and you can get many to bite.

There are plenty of coaches out there with credentials. Oregon State has struggled for years to stay out of the PACWhatever cellar with a guy who has done everything, including coached (and medaled) in the Olympics.
