The Gaels defeat the number 9 ranked Broncos at home in 5 games after being down 0-2!!
Missie Stidham did not play at outside and middle blocker Christina Kirk filled her shoes hitting .326 with 22 kills and 6 blocks! Setter Mandy Bible added 8 kills hitting .500 with 55 assists, 13 digs and 10 blocks...2 solo!
Go Gaels!!

All American setter Crystal Matich did not play for Santa Clara. Nor did All WCC conference MB Annalisa Muratore who apparently resigned from the team a couple of days ago.

What kind of injury does Mattich have? And that really sucks for Muratore and SCU that her injuries just took their toll and she had to retire from the sport. For a top 10 team, we hear very little about them, so hopefully an SCU fan can fill us in. Nice win for St Marys, but a tough week for SCU. Still, a pretty admirable effort by frosh setter Evans, 3 kills shy of a triple double, 69 assists and 11 digs.

This is all weird. It sounds like Stidham was playing back-row only. The only time I've heard of that was when someone was nursing a sprained ankle, wanted to reduce jumping, and was a good enough back-row player to justify keeping her in the lineup.

Stidham didn't play at all in the previous match, where the Gaels were swept at home by Sac State (just after Santa Clara pummeled Sac State). BC, you may recall that in Stidmans frosh year, she began as an outstanding libero, then DS, then combo DS/OS when Stevenson saw how versatile she was.

I also remember that Stevenson liked to change his libero a lot. She'd play libero one game and hit the next.

Stidham is nursing a sore ankle that she injured in practice. The CSTV all access video of the match shows her clearly favoring her left ankle while on the court. Kolka also has been used sparingly while recovering from a knee injury from earlier in the year and had her brace on the entire match. Both teams missing some top players in key roles.
The main difference that was that St Marys moved players from other posistions to cover these gaps while SCU was able to use players recruited for middle and setter to start. Not sure which is more difficult.....
The Lindsy Evans, the freshman setter for SCU had an amazing match and looks like solid lock for the job when Matich graduates.

I believe Megan Pura was recruited as an outside.

I said this match would be better than SF's. Of course no one listens to me.

I said this match would be better than SF's. Of course no one listens to me. Hey - I saw three games decided by two points, and two that went over 30. It doesn't get much more competetive than that. And I decided to go to USD at SMC tomorrow. I'm still not sure what game time is. SMC says 2:05 PM, while the WCC and USD says 1 PM.

Bible almost had a quadruple double, 8 Kills, 55 asst., 13 digs, 10 blocks....wow. When was the last time someone turned in double-digits in all four of those areas?

If Matich was injured, that is huge. I hope it is just a muscle strain. Where are all the SClara fans? Are you out there?

My condolences to Mandy Bible and her family. Her mom was so proud of her, and with performances like this, the rest of us get a little glimpse of why. We will miss you Cindy.
