I'm home - after I barely snuck in dinner at the Fog City Diner before they closed at 10.
USF plays hard. It was a sloppy affair though. The up ref allowed a pretty nasty double at the start of the match, and it pretty much took an absolutely egregious lift/double to get called for the rest of the night. At least she was consistent.
Kristen Carlson has an absolute hammer. Oh - and the USF players tossed out full-sized volleyballs to the crowd.
Pictures to follow.

A few more comments.
It's odd seeing a left-handed leftside (Kristen Carlson) but she gets it done. I think I've seen one one other player do it. She's also got a pretty imposing knee-brace. It's like the kind football linemen wear.

Jill Odenthal hit on the left side for her first two years at Wisconsin, if memory serves. She was pretty good at it. I think the trait she shares with Carlson is that both were pretty athletic, so they could make adjustments on off sets and keep it in play. It has to be a strange look for opposing blockers.

I saw Jenna Brown do it at Cal in 2002 when Gabrielle Abernathy was unavailable for the year. It's not that bad - just square up a little to the right and you've got all the angles. It makes a lot of sense to have your best hitter on the left to handle the out of system sets that typically get set to the left. Due to injuries last Spring, Cal didn't have a full complement of outsides at the San Jose State spring tourney, and they had Bryte Neilson hit from the left. She took a whole lot of time to square around and it didn't look like she was real comfortable with it. I asked her mom if she'd ever done that before, and the answer was never - at any level.

One more thing, USF charges a whopping $10 for adult general admission.

Do they charge for parking? Technically yes, but most people would park on the street across the street. I was lucky and found a parking spot early. They have virtually no on-campus parking. The main campus is surrounded by a residential area of San Francisco.
