Mike Hebert Named to AVCA Hall of Fame
University of Minnesota Head Volleyball Coach Mike Hebert was named to the fourth annual America Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame Class according to an announcement by the AVCA. Hebert will be inducted, along with Deborah Chin, Carol Dewey, Mick Haley, Sue Gozansky, Sue Woodstra and John Zoltek in a ceremony that will take place in Omaha, Neb. on Wednesday Dec. 13, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. as part of the AVCA Convention.
The induction will take place in conjunction with the 2006 AVCA Annual Convention, which will take place on Dec. 11-16 at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb. The AVCA Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have and continue to make significant contributions to the AVCA and the sport of volleyball.
“Awards like this are very special when they come from a group of your own peers,” said Hebert. “Having served as a former president of the AVCA I am especially honored to receive this award, considering how important this organization has been to the success of our sport. I am also very honored to be included with this class, and a group of people who I have a great deal of respect for.”
Hebert, has compiled an 837-351 career record in his 31st season as a Division I head coach. He has led his teams to the NCAA semifinals four times, twice at Illinois (1987 & 1988) and twice at Minnesota (2003 & 2004). Hebert is the only coach in the history of women’s volleyball to lead two programs from the same conference to the National Semifinals.
He is also one of only three coaches to lead two different programs to multiple National Semifinal appearances. Hebert is one of only two coaches to receive five or more Big Ten Coach of the Year honors, doing so in 1985, 1986, 1988, 1999 and 2002. He was also named the AVCA National Coach of the Year in 1985 and the Volleyball Magazine Coach of the Year in 2003.
This past week, Hebert became the winningest head coach in school history with his 264th career victory against Northwestern on Sept. 22. Hebert is now the winningest coach at both Minnesota and Illinois. He finished his 13-year stint at Illinois with 323 wins, two NCAA Semifinal appearances and four conference titles.
In addition to his college duties, Hebert has also served USA Volleyball as the Head Coach for multiple international tournaments, including the Pan Am Games and the World University Games.
“It is a great honor to be able to recognize people who have contributed in such significant ways to our sport and our organization,” said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. “This class is full of coaches and athletes with many wins, but just as significant is the countless hours they have worked to develop the sport of volleyball and to convince others to love it with the same passion they love it.”
