49ers Earn Hard Fought Five-Game Victory
Complete Team Effort in Conference Opening Win

LONG BEACH, CA -- The Long Beach State women‚s volleyball team opened conference play with a gritty five-game victory over UC Santa Barbara in front of a season-high 2,266 fans at the Walter Pyramid on Friday night. Game scores were 19-30, 30-26, 30-27, 23-30, 15-12.
Long Beach State improved to 10-3, 1-0 Big West, while UCSB fell to 7-7, 0-2 Big West.
Mischa Hasalikova and Alexis Crimes both had 21 kills to lead Long Beach State, while Robin Miramontes checked in with her third double-double of the season (13 kills, and a career-high 16 digs). Nicole Vargas registered her seventh double-double of the year with 61 assists and 13 digs. Talaya Whitfield posted a personal-best 18 digs, and Iris Murray posted a match-best 24 digs.
Jamie Garbisch led the Gauchos with 21 kills. UCSB did out-block LBSU, 15.5-14.
Santa Barbara used a .630 attack percentage (18-1-27) to register a 30-19 game one victory over the 49ers. The Gauchos held a 10-8 lead before two straight points by LBSU tied the score at 10-10 (Miramontes kill). UCSB unlocked a 13-13 tie with a 6-1 run, capped off by a Jamie Garbisch kill to claim a 19-14 lead. Long Beach State could not trim the deficit the rest of the way and
eventually surrendered the 11-point loss.
Long Beach State went on the offensive in game two, and came away with a 30-26 victory to even the match at 1-1. After UCSB tied the game at 17-17, the 49ers went on a 7-2 run to build some separation and a 24-19 lead, courtesy of a Gaucho attack error. The Gauchos gave one last push late in the set, trimming the deficit to 26-24, but LBSU closed out UCSB with a 4-2 run, highlighted by a Verdin kill for the victory.
LB kept its hot hitting in the third set and came away with a 30-27 victory and a 2-1 match lead. The 49ers registered a .340 attack percentage (23-5-53), and limited the Gauchos to just a .151 clip (14-6-53). Long Beach State unlocked a 26-26 tie with a 4-1 run to close out the stanza.
The Gauchos forced a fifth game after a 30-23 game four victory. Despite hitting just .133 in the game, UCSB managed to maintain leads to prevent a 49er rally. LBSU hit .000 in the stanza. Long Beach State rallied early and took control late in the deciding game to come away with the 15-12 win.
The 49ers host No. 20 Cal Poly tomorrow night at 7 pm from the Walter Pyramid.
