EUGENE, Ore. – Senior hitter Erin Little had 10 kills and 15 digs to lead the University of Oregon volleyball team to its first conference win of the season, a 3-1 defeat of intrastate rival Oregon State in Pac-10 conference action Friday night at McArthur Court.
The Ducks (11-2, 1-2) snapped a six-match losing streak against the Beavers (3-9, 0-3) dating back to 2003, winning by scores of 30-25, 30-25, 24-30 and 30-16, in front of a season-high crowd of 2,260.
“This is one we were supposed to win,” second-year head coach Jim Moore said. “Not to take anything away from Oregon State, but we’ve been playing like we’re ready to take the next step.”
Little and Oregon’s other two seniors – Kristen Bitter and Heather Madison – had never experienced a Civil War victory prior to Friday’s match.
“Winning this one gives us confidence,” Little said. “We know that if we play hard, we can succeed.”
Freshman blocker Sonja Newcombe led all players with 19 kills and 22.0 points, and fellow frosh Neticia Enesi contributed nine kills and 11.0 points.
OSU was paced by freshman hitter Rachel Rourke’s 18 kills and 19.0 points. Senior Brittany Cahoon ended the match with 13 kills and six total blocks for 18.0 points.
The Beavers didn’t seriously threaten the Ducks until Game 3, when they out-hit their hosts, .357 to .075. Cahoon had three kills and four blocks in the set as Oregon State recorded seven blocks to UO’s none.
The Ducks snapped back in Game 4, hitting .414 and shutting out the Beavers on the block while blocking six of their own.
For the match, UO hit .260 and held OSU to a .125 clip, and finished with an 11.0 to 9.0 edge in total blocks.
“I’m not sure this is a ‘breakthrough’ win for us,” said Moore of his squad’s second Pac-10 win since the beginning of 2005. “But we absolutely had to win this match and we’ve never been in that situation before.”
Oregon goes on the road next week to face defending NCAA champion Washington and Washington State on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
This Oregon team is getting better, so is the Oregon State team who has a 6'5 girl on their roster. Could these 2 programs challenge the pac-10, just like Washington's improvement, in a couple of years?
