Tough road for Charlie, and that's too bad. Jayne really destroyed a once dominant program. To think they were in the final four in '99 and now this?

Congratulations to Northridge. I saw them play a week ago and they have definitely turned the corner in their rebuilding process. 1000 times better than their performance last year. This is still a very young team that will get even better.

First, don't get me wrong because I like Charie Wade and appreciate what he did for Hawaii. That said, I don't feel sorry for him this season. I'm sure he did his homework and knew the talent he had coming back on the team. He also knew the challenges of starting the recruiting season when he did.
Other coaches have come in to sinking or sunk ships and made immediate improvements. It is not like he lost a lot of great talent to graduation. If Jayne was soooooo bad, why have they continued to slide further down? What impact players does he have coming in for 2007 and 2008 who will raise the talent level? They obviously had big problems previously. What changes has he made to the program for long term growth?

Well - I've expressed my displeasure about how he went about getting one particular member of his first recruiting class. I don't particularly wish him ill, but everyone is right that Charlie knew (or should have known) that Pacific was in for a boatload of growing pains over the next few years. The injuries certainly didn't help his cause - not that they'd have a winning record in the Big West fully healthy. However - I do feel for the Pacific fans. They've been loyal over the years, and are still bringing in attendance numbers that most teams would envy. They're used to a standard of excellence that I don't see them achieving any time soon.

I've nevr thought much of Pacific so it doesn't surpise me that they got beat by Northridge. How they got beat is surprising to me however. To get swept AND one of those losses being a 30-8 game is pathetic.

To get swept AND one of those losses being a 30-8 game is pathetic. They have a long, proud history of successful volleyball, eventual national team players, and two championships. Coach McHugh was able to ride on the talent of John Dunning's last recruiting classes for a few years. Of course that doesn't do anything for the recruit who's not exactly impressed with their current state of affairs and was born after Pacific's last championship. I guess they had quite a tease when they easily outplayed Cal for two games. That high didn't last long.

Yeah I know they had a good past but since I got into volleyball they haven't been living up to expectations.

Pacific was hurt by transfers too. Both of the setters last year transferred, so Wade had to scramble to find walk ons at the last minute. I compare this to when Heffernan took over at Washington State, basically the cupboard was bare, only now is the WSU program starting to recover. It may take 3 or 4 years to really assess the job Charlie Wade has done. However the administration doesn't strike me as one that is very patient or forgiving (judging from how they dealt with McHugh last year), how much time will he be given to turn things around?
I really hope that he can turn it around, not only for Pacific, but for his own career prospects. Look at Howard Wallace despite being a good assistant coach at Hawaii, he never really found success at Creighton as was fired. I know he has admitted that his dream would one day to take over for Dave Shoji at Hawaii, but if he isn't succesful at Pacific, I really can't see that happening. The AD would probably want to go with someone with a better track record. I could see someone like Jon Stevenson at Cal Poly or Jon Wallace at Santa Clara wanting to coach at Hawaii someday. I would guess the Hawaii job would pay a lot more than what either is making right now.

Plus Uhl got hurt, and she was the team's most experienced player. Charlie's holding this thing together with bubblegum and a shoestring. They'll be better next year.

We did lose a lot of our players due to transfers or injuries. Probably the best player we lost was Mussie to Washington. Hopefully we should be able to bounce right back. I mean our next match is against UC Davis who lost to UC Riverside in 5. However, I never really thought that we would lose to some of the teams that we lost to before this year. It kinda makes me wonder how good/bad our volleyball really is. We lost to Fresno State who from what everyone was saying was a very bad team. It is going to be a long Big West season but it is not too late to be in 4th place in the Big West as predicted in preseason.

My concern from the beginning has been that references to Wade have always been about his ability to recuit, and not about his ability to coach or develop talent. When you look at the team, there is only one junior on the floor, everyone else is a sophomore or freshman--they have talent, but it is raw. You can't coach that team the way you would a veteran team with all-world talent--the type of teams he had in Hawaii. I also think he would do well to develop the entire roster as he is way too committed to players who do not deliver. I still think Pacific CAN be good next year, and SHOULD be good in two years, but he'll have to show he is more than just a good recruiter.

I think that Brian Gimmillaro could have given a speech similar to what Charlie gave.....our scores may look better but our play isn't anything to be proud of!

Most of the time its good input but on this one HuskerVBfan is clueless. They lost 2 all-conference seniors, 1 very solid senior (all recruited by Dunning), and 3 transfers including their junior setter and two talented sophomores, all who moved back to schools closer to home. Jayne did have some players. But this past year's class was the first year they did not recruit a Prep VB top 100 player.
I only see 1 senior on the roster so 2007 wasn't going to be an impact year recruiting-wise anyway. With taking the job in late winter, jump into spring practice then coordinate moving his family a few time zones away, their probably wasn't much time to recruit yet. The beginning of any impact on recruiting toward the rebuilding process can't really start until the class of 2008. There's a ways to go with this program and I'm sure he did know what he was getting into. Some of the coaches who turned things around right away had a good core group with either immediate impact transfers or already good recruits who came in after taking the reins.
