LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's volleyball team, which split a pair of hair-raising and stomach-knotting matches over the weekend, is back in Big West Conference action at 7 o'clock tonight when it plays host to the Cal State Northridge Matadors.
The 49ers (1-1 in conference and 10-4 overall) knocked off the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos in five games in their Big West opener Friday night but fell to nationally ranked Cal Poly the next evening despite holding a 14-12 advantage, with the serve, in Game 5.
Northridge is 3-0 in conference (sharing the lead with Cal Poly) and 9-4 overall. The Matadors take a six-match winning streak into the Walter Pyramid tonight.
"They are a pretty darn good volleyball team," Long Beach Coach Brian Gimmillaro said of his team's opposition tonight.
"They just (routed) Pacific there (in Stockton, 30-25, 30-25 and 30-8) Saturday and that is always a tough place to play."
Sophomore middle blocker Val Kepler had 12 kills for the Matadors on Saturday night while freshman setter Angela Hupp had nine kills, 16 assists, 12 digs and four blocks.
The 49ers have another home Big West match Thursday night against the UC Irvine Anteaters, who held a 2-1 advantage over UCSB on Saturday night before losing in five games.
Long Beach rallied from a 2-0 deficit (20-30 and 19-30) Saturday night against the Mustangs as newcomer Talaya Whitfield (a Poly High graduate) turned in a 22-dig, nine-kill performance to help spark the comeback.
Junior middle blocker Alexis Crimes needs 12 kills for Long Beach tonight to become the 13th player in the program's history with 1,000 or more.
