AMES, Iowa -- Texas’ freshman opposite hitter Ashley Engle posted her third consecutive kill/dig double-double Tuesday night, as the Longhorns swept the Iowa State Cyclones, 3-0 (30-18, 30-20, 30-21) at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. Engle led Texas (10-4, 5-2 Big 12) with a team-high 16 kills and 13 digs, while senior outside hitter Dariam Acevedo added 10 kills and 10 digs in the victory.
The Longhorns led Iowa State (11-5, 3-3 Big 12), 4-0 early in game one, using an Acevedo service ace and three Cyclones hitting errors to gain a quick advantage. Texas stretched the lead to 7-1 a few points later and extended its lead to 18-10 with Engle and Lauren Paolini pacing a 3-0 UT run. The Horns posted another 3-0 run late in the game, receiving an ace from junior setter Michelle Moriarty and a block assist by Engle and Paolini to extend the lead to 28-17. Two Cyclones errors down the stretch closed out the game with the Longhorns winning, 30-18.
Iowa State grabbed the lead in game two at the 2-1 mark and held the lead until an ISU miscue gave the Longhorns their first lead of the game at the 14-13 mark. The Texas attack caught fire at that point, running off six straight points to take a commanding 21-14 lead and it would never look back. Junior outside hitter Jen Christian anchored UT during the run, recording a solo block and a pair of kills.
Texas put the match away later in the game, when it used another 6-0 run, highlighted by kills from Engle, Acevedo and senior middle blocker Jen Todd to claim a 28-18 advantage. Engle closed out the game with two consecutive kills that pushed the final tally to 30-20.
In the third stanza the Longhorns fell behind in the early going, but rallied back to take the lead on an Engle kill at the 11-10 mark. Acevedo and Engle headlined the rally, rattling off four straight points, with Engle recording two kills and Acevedo posting a kill and an ace to move the score to 14-10. The Longhorns extended their lead to six on a pair of points by Acevedo and eventually blew the game open with a 4-0 run, highlighted by an Engle kill and an Engle/Moriarty block assist that gave UT a 24-15 edge.
