So after a really nice win Friday night, MSU gives it back with a bad loss to Northwestern on Sat.
After that Illinois win, they were sitting in pretty good shape, threatening to finish at the top of the bottom half of the conference. Thus pulls them back.

Boy Illinois really seems to be struggling this year. Not the same team who knocked off USC! Their program has really been going through a rebuilding. Well, hopefully they can put it back together soon.

hard to say what is a bad loss anymore.
iowa nearly upsets purdue, but northwestern kills iowa. indiana beats michigan, but iowa kills indiana. illinois blanks northwestern, gets hammered by michigan state, northwestern beats michigan state...
only one thing seems true: penn state is at a different level. minnesota, purdue, ohio st, and wisconsin will battle for #2. northwestern, mich state, and mich will battle for a bubble spot -- guessing they will all be 9-11 or 10-10 in conference -- then it's matter of the committee honoring a 10-0 easy preconference for the michigans or honoring the too-tough hawaii/stanford/arizona pre-10s of NU.

MSU completely fell apart after the first game. They were just awful last night. Even in the third game (which they won), they were up 23-13 and then blew the lead and Northwestern came back to make it 24-23.
I hope Cathy George decides to go back to the old lineup that actually worked earlier this season. They've moved Jessica Hohl to opposite and put Mischelle Nelson in the middle (although Heather McDaniel played in games 2-4 last night), and it's really not working. Hohl was hitting .400+ as a middle through the preseason and the first week of Big 10 play. More than anything though, I REALLY wish coach George would let the outsides play all the way around. I think Tracy Bellwood has left the team (whether voluntarily I don't know), so they've lost one of their top two DSs, and having these freshmen/sophomore DSs come in for Schatzle and Johnson is just killing the team. Plus, with the outsides in the backrow they'd have some offense, too. Oh well.

Even though MSU was awful last night, they have been doing well this season. Katie Johnson has cut down on her errors remarkably. She's hitting .311 and averaging 4.98 kills through 55 games this season. MSU's freshman middle had 15 kills and hit above .600 last night, too! Progress is being made And it's heartening to think MSU _could_ just as easily be sitting at 5-1 right now if they had a little more luck in the five game matches with Purdue, Minnesota, and Northwestern (this one stings the most though). We play Michigan on Wednesday in Ann Arbor, hopefully MSU can pull out a win on the road.

Good to see that MSU's blocking was there this weekend. I think that made a huge difference. MSU beat Northwestern in almost every statistical category but still managed to lose. Vanessa King is doing a really nice job so far which is really good. Hohl wasn't used much this weekend, as her attempts were pretty low. Is this because the passing has not allowed her to be more involved? It seems like they would really benefit by getting Hohl and King more involved offensively, they have been putting up good numbers so far.

OK, so the bottom half of the Big Ten gets even more complicated.
Teams W L Pct. W L Pct. Penn State 5 0 1.000 17 0 1.000 Minnesota 5 0 1.000 11 5 Purdue 5 1 .833 15 2 .882 Wisconsin 5 1 .833 14 3 .824 Michigan 2 4 .333 15 4 .789 Ohio State 2 4 .333 12 4 .750 Illinois 2 4 .333 11 5 .688 Northwestern 2 4 .333 8 7 .533 Michigan State 2 4 .333 11 5 .688 Iowa 1 5 .167 12 6 .667 Indiana 1 5 .167 10 8 .556
Michigan, Ohio St, Illinois, Northwestern, and Michigan St are all 2 - 4 Iowa and Indiana are only 1 game back (1 game out of 5th place, that means)
Whose going to step up and take control of the bottom half?
