Panthers Move Into First Place Tie With 3-2 Win at Creighton
Omaha, Neb. - The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team moved into a first-place tie in the Missouri Valley Conference, after posting a 3-2 win at Creighton Friday night. Game scores were 23-30, 30-22, 22-30, 30-22 and 15-13. With the win, UNI improves to 13-6 overall, 5-1 in the MVC, while Creighton falls to 13-4 and 5-1 in conference.
UNI's stellar play in five-game matches continued, as the Panthers improved to 5-1 this season in contests that have been extended to the limit. UNI is now an impressive 29-7 in five-gamers since 1997. The win also improved the Panthers all-time record against the Bluejays in volleyball to 26-1.
Freshman outside hitter Shannon Aschoff (Ankeny, Iowa) led the Panthers with a career-high 15 kills, while hitting .343 (15-3-35). Senior middle blocker Trista Humpal (New Hampton, Iowa) had a double-double with 12 kills and a season-best 10 blocks, and junior outside hitter Laura Rowen (Hansell, Iowa) also had a double-double with 11 kills and a team-high 19 digs.
Creighton jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first game, forcing a quick UNI timeout. The Panthers pulled to within 14-10, but CU scored the next five points to extend its advantage to 19-10. With Creighton holding a 25-18 lead, UNI rallied, scoring five straight points to pull within 25-23. But the Bluejays responded after their own timeout, scoring the final five points to win, 30-23.
UNI turned the tables in game two, posting leads of 5-1, 10-3 and 17-9. Creighton pulled to within four, 20-16, but would get no closer as the Panthers claimed a 30-22 win to pull even in the match.
Creighton took a 2-1 lead with a 30-22 win in game three. UNI kept it close, trailing just two as late as 19-17. But CU scored five of the next six points to open a 24-19 advantage, and eventually post a 30-22 win. The Bluejays hit .279 (20-8-43) in the third game.
In game four, it was once again a quick start by the Panthers that proved to be the difference. On Belzung's serve, UNI scored the first nine points of the game and cruised to a 30-22 win. The Panthers hit .270 (14-4-37) in the fourth game, while Creighton hit .082 (16-12-49).
In the decisive fifth game, UNI took the lead for good, 7-6, on consecutive kills by Humpal. Creighton pulled within 9-8, before an Aschoff kill and a Bluejay hitting error gave UNI an 11-8 advantage. After a CU timeout, UNI scored three of the next four points to go up 14-10. Creighton rallied with three straight points to pull within 14-13, but after a UNI timeout, Kristin Belzung (Ankeny, Iowa) hooked up with Humpal for the match-clinching kill.
Creighton had 78 kills to 56 for UNI, but the Bluejays also recorded 49 hitting errors to just 29 for the Panthers. The 49 errors were the most by a Panther opponent this season, with 19 of them coming on UNI blocks.
