Nice win for Iowa State!
BOULDER, Colo. – Katie Jessen became just the sixth player in Iowa State history to surpass 1,000 career kills as Iowa State defeated Colorado, 3-0 (30-20, 30-25, 30-27), in Boulder for the first time since 1987.
The Cyclones (12-6, 4-4 Big 12) have now won 13 Big 12 matches in one and a half years under head coach Christy Johnson, equaling the school’s total in the nine years prior to her arrival.
Jessen paced the Cyclones with 14 kills, making her the sixth Cyclone to reach 1,000 career kills. No. 1000 came in the third game and gave Iowa State a 20-15 lead.
The Cyclones hit .348 as a team and out dug Colorado (9-6, 5-3), 49 to 43, and used 12 kills from Nicole Lorenzen and 10 kills from Lauren Cummings. Erin Boeve had nine kills and hit .471 despite battling illness all week. Diane Kieger also had six kills in the win and Katie Churm led the way with 11 digs.
“I thought it was a just a great team effort,” said Johnson. “I was impressed with how well Boeve played despite being sick and I think our outsides are making great decisions. Kieger also did a great job tonight.”
The Cyclones led early in game one, 4-3, before the Buffaloes rattled off six straight to go up 9-4. Colorado held the lead until ISU tied it up at 17-17 and scored the next six points to take a 23-17 lead. A kill by Boeve pushed the Cyclone lead to 27-19 and ISU held on to win 30-20 on a kill by Cummings.
The Cyclones out hit Colorado, .297 to .043, in game one and were led by five kills from Jessen and Cummings.
Iowa State blistered the ball in the second game, hitting .432 en route to a 30-25 win. The Cyclones again took an early lead in game two before falling behind briefly. Trailing 14-12, the Cyclones scored the next three points to go up 15-14 before extending the lead to 23-19 on a block by Boeve and Cummings following a Colorado timeout. Lorenzen had a pair of big kills when Colorado was able to trim the lead to two points down the stretch.
The Cyclones erased any doubt in game three, jumping out to a 7-3 and never trailing in the game. Colorado was able to close the gap to 20-18 before a Manns’ kill stalled the CU rally. Iowa State went on to win the game 30-27.
Lauren Schaefer led Colorado with 12 kills in the loss.
