After averaging 6.33 digs per game in helping No. 8 Florida move into sole possession of first place in the Southeastern Conference, freshman libero Elyse Cusack (Melrose, Fla.) was honored for the second time this season as the SEC's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Cusack, who leads the league in digs per game at a 5.22 clip, tallied 38 digs in a pair of matches last weekend as the Gators swept No. 13 LSU and Arkansas in gaining control of their own destiny in the race for the program's 16th consecutive SEC title.
Cusack led all players with 23 digs in the contest against LSU - a career best in a three-game match and the fourth time in her career that she's reached 20-plus digs in a match. During the week, Cusack led all players in digs in five of six games the Gators played in and she broke the record for most digs by a freshman libero/defensive specialist and now has 240. Cusack has finished all 14 contests of her career in double-figures in digs and is on pace to break the SEC record for digs per game of 5.12 set by UF's Rachel Engel in 2005.
The honor is the third overall for Cusack this season as she was named the Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 6 and the SEC's Freshman of the Week on Oct. 2.
The Gators (16-2 overall, 9-1 SEC) will play at home for the second-straight weekend when UF hosts South Carolina at 8 p.m. (ET) on Friday, Oct. 20 and welcomes Georgia to the O'Connell Center on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1:30 p.m. Sunday's match can be seen live on Sun Sports, while Friday's match is available via GatorVision Online. Both contests can be heard on WRUF-AM 850 and www.GatorZone.com.
