Injuries are always a part of the game but it would be interesting to see what things would have been like had McGee not gone down with an ACL for Texas, Uhart for Kansas and Liliom for Kansas State. 3 season ending knee injuries to major impact players and starters in the same conference all in the pre-season is really amazing.

The same could be said if Houghteling hadn't gone down. There is a huge gap between Houghteling and Mancuso. I think Nebraska would be a much heavier favorite to win the title but as it is, is now lumped in with 5 or 6 teams, which is good for the sport overall I guess. |

Don't be greedy lilred. You get her back next year along with everyone else on the team except Busboom and Mancuso. Nebraska will be the heavy favorite next season. It also wasn't like Houghtelling's injury was acute. She had problems with it last Spring but an ACL is different. Also Nebraska had the choice to let her play this season but opted not to because of her future so they obviously felt with Pavan, Larson and Stalls carrying most of the offensive load, they could live without her this year in order to have her back next year FULL strength. I have a hard time feeling sorry for Nebraska when they continue to dominate every year.

This is a semi threadjack but why the wednesday / saturday scheduling? If you don't want to read the long thread to get the small amount of worthwhile information.... The BigTen (and I assume the Big12) pairs off schools as travelling partners. Minnesota and Wisconsin (partners this year) will play (for example) Michigan and Michigan State on the same weekend. We'll play MI on Friday and MSU on Saturday, and Wisconsin will play MSU on Friday and MI on Saturday. That works to play eight of the opponents in conference. But you still have to play your travel partner, and in the Big10 and Big12's case, you have to play the odd (11th) team. Both issues are handled with the same solution. You and your travel partner play the odd team on Friday and Saturday. (So from the odd team's perspective, all weeks look normal.) From your perspective, on the weeks you play the 11th team, you play on only one of the two weekend nights. And note that there is no other conference team you could play on your off night. So, because you have only one match that week against a non-travel-partner, and your partner school similarly plays only one match on the weekend, you play each other earlier in the week. It could be any day other than Friday or Saturday, but with potentially long travel times, Wednesday seems to work out best. |

OU has had Texas, Nebraska, & Missouri all at home. They went 2-1 through those matches.
Traveling to those sites will be tough. going 1-2 would probably be a feat.
of course, assuming nebraska runs the course, going 0-3 through those, if they can run the other 7, would give the sooners no worse than a 2 way tie for 2nd. a pretty impressive turn around.

And always keep in mind, this is Oklahoma we are talking about. They were picked to finish 10th. I don't think any of the Sooner fans would be disappointed with a tie for 2nd. Heck, I think that even if they drop to third I would be very impressed. Third place in the Big 12 is usually a very good season for most teams. Yeah, it would be disappointing for Nebraska or Texas (and even though it is only one place lower than picked, I would include Texas as one of the big "losers" in the Big 12 - they were supposed to compete for a national championship, even, and they are only tied for third in the conference?). But for OU, given their recent history, I think it is a very exciting season. Good for them. |

I was wondering more of why wedneday saturday instead of something like friday / sunday...
Competing with football has to make it hard to get more fans interested....

either way you have to miss a day of school, this schedule gives you more time to recover and more time to prepare for the next match. Chartering makes a big difference, Nebrasaka was back in Lincoln by midnight last night.

Something else about the B12 is the fact that most of the schools are hard to get to. Not every school will charter for WVB and unless you fly into a regional airport you are looking at long flights with long drive times to boot.
Missouri - fly into Kansas City or St. Louis and drive 2 hrs to Columbia.
Kansas - fly into KC and drive 45 mins. to Lawerance.
Kansas State - fly into KC and drive 2 hrs. to Manhattan.
Texas A&M - fly into Austin or Houston and drive at least an hour to College Station.
Nebraska - fly into Omaha and drive over an hour to Lincoln.
Baylor - fly into Austin or Dallas and drive over an hour to Waco.
Colorado - fly into Denver and drive to Boulder.
Easy travel sites, Oklahoma (Oklahoma City 30 minutes away), Tech (airport in Lubbock) and Texas (airport in Austin).
I know other conference might bus 5 hours to a match, but their other opponent that weekend is seldom more than a quick drive from the first team's location. I don't think a Fri./Sun. schedule would really work. As for the football conflict, I know several team try to work a ticket to the football game gets you into the VB match for free type promotion.
