Wasn't too long ago these were the top dogs in the ACC and playing in the NCAA tournament. So, why are they pretty much bringing up the rear in the ACC this year? I thought Shymansky was the 2nd coming, at least many proclaimed him to be on this board after their run to the elite 8 in 2003 with that great team and their 2004 run when they lost to Minnesota in one hell of a match. I look at their roster and see a lot of talent. The ACC is way down this year, so why are they struggling? Last year I thought was just a bump in the road, but it seems it wasn't.
And what's up with UNC? They won the ACC last year and this year, are 10 matches under .500 overall with only 2 ACC wins. What is going on? They have talent and Joe is a pretty good coach, I just don't get it.
These 2 teams, esp. in a down year in the league, should not be tied for 9th.

First I am a big fan of the ACC - I have seen Georgia Tech about 6 times so far this season. The problem is passing. Individuals have talent, aren't seem to mix it right on the court - LYNETTE MOSTER - was never replaced
At Carolina, 2 many young kids playing, Pretty much all sophomores and freshman playing - just not performing - don't block well enough, setting is inconsistent.

I said then, and I will echo again, Shelton Collier built the GT program and was the mastermind of taking that program to the height of GT volleyball. Bond is more of a salesman. He has brought in highly recruited athletes who certainly appear to have the ability to dominate the ACC, but it is not happening. Collier could sell the program, motivate the athletes, train, and was an exceptional match coach. I don't think the current staff meets that criteria. Not a bad staff, but not what GT had before. I cannot understand why GT is not one of the top two in the league this year.

On the other hand a team like Clemson is currently 2nd in ACC and I'm sure not many people expected that.

some observations:
Sagula has won a ACC championship with his own recruits, Shymansky has not
While Shymansky was winning, making videos , and enjoying all the success with the previous coaches players, people were wondering why he seldom mentioned Collier for handing him such a sweet deal, while Cook at Nebraska, even now , often publicly credits Pettit his success. Dunning credited Liskevych for his national championships at UOP.
After having all those experienced players from the previous regime, and winning, there should not be such a huge dropoff immediately in production. The excuse of being young is so lame. ( the previous coach had "young" teams as well, but they were successful.) Two years in a row of no NCAA's in such a terrible league is reason to be questioned. Losing in back to back years to Boston College ? No one in the Big Ten or Big 12 could get away with that unscathed. Being young does not have to equate to being bad, especially with such strong recruits in such a weak league.
The above post mentioning Shymansky being the 2nd coming is interesting, after the self promotion, and other posters proclaiming brilliance, it seems there is now a free pass given with no questions raised. Maybe it is simply that there is not as much interest in the ACC, but other coaches sure do feel the heat on this board when they are underachieving.( Gimmilaro, Hardin,Weismiller,Shoji, Gregory, etc)
Two years ago, with all the great inherited players, GT was very good, last year they were bad, and this year they are even worse. This is a downhill slide, in a bad league with no ranked teams. Most coaches take over a team as a new coach because the other coach failed, and the program had to be re-built from failure, which is very difficult. In this case, the program was turned over with everything in place from fan support, great players, recruiting contacts, everything. Any ideas on what is happening there ?
No question Sagula should have a better team as well. Maybe being such a humble guy gets him some slack.

ACC is the most underwhelming volleyball conference in America. Great schools with great traditions and academics, no volleyball powerhouse.

GT is in 10th place ? Is this the same or different than Jayne McGugh at UOP after Dunning, or Jim Moore after Haley at Texas ?
