OK - this is Concordia of St. Paul, MN. Not Detroit, not Moorhead, MN, or other locations. Just wanted to clear up the confusion.
Big match for Concordia on Tuesday as they take on #5 UMD (University of Minnesota - Duluth, not U of MI-Dearborn)
Golden Bears Clinch NSIC Championship with Win Over Mustangs
Oct. 21– #7 Concordia University (28-2, 16-0 NSIC) clinched their fourth consecutive Northern Sun regular season championship as they defeated #21 SW Minnesota State (25-6, 13-3 NSIC) in four games, 33-31, 30-27, 25-30, 30-26, on Saturday evening at the Gangelhoff Center. The regular season title means the Bears will host the NSIC Tournament for the third-straight year. They won the NSIC Tournament each of the last two years.
Senior Jessica Lucia (left) led five Bears in double-digit kills with 18 as she posted a double-double, recording 17 digs. She also added four assists and a pair of blocks.
Also recording a double-double for Concordia was senior Ashley Olson (right) who had 13 kills and 13 digs with two blocks. Senior Kelsey Kyro posted 17 kills, four digs and three blocks while sophomore Maria Steinhagen totaled 13 kills and hit .429 while posting a team-high five blocks, two solo.
The CU defense was led by senior libero Megan Graham's (left) 19 digs while freshman Mary Slinger produced 17 to match Lucia. CU posted nine blocks but were outblocked 16-9 by the Mustangs, who were led by Kasey Loeslie's 11 (four solo).
Freshman setter Maggie McNamara (right) piled up 65 assists and just missed a double-double with nine digs. She led the Bears to a .408 hitting pct. in the fourth game to seal the win.
The Mustangs were led by Erin Contons who produced 24 kills and had 16 digs and four blocks while hitting .266 in 64 attacks. The SMSU setter, Monica Ashburn, had a 20/20 performance with 57 assists and 21 digs and led SMSU to hit over .350 in two of the four games. Megan Wendorff had seven kills with just one error in the first game but managed just seven kills over the final three games to finish with 14.
The victory for the Bears extends multiple streaks: their conference winning streak is now at 57 which ties the fifth longest such streak in NCAA Division II history and is just two shy of fourth place. They extend their home winning streak to 23 matches, dating back to 2004. The win also puts their current winning streak to 12 matches, which is the streak SMSU had snapped with their loss tonight.
The Northern Sun champion Golden Bears will return to the floor on Tuesday, October 24 when they host regional rival #5 Minnesota Duluth. The Bulldogs are currently the top ranked team in the region while the Bears are a close second. UMD defeated CU in four games back on September 26 in Duluth, Minn.
Congrats to Concordia Golden Bears!
