Go 'Clones!
(Even if Hilton does suck as a volleyball arena)

Hilton's atmosphere is much improved since Christy took the job. She has brought in the pep band, added student seating to each end of the court. The arena recently overwent the first stage of a facelift, that includes a brand new state-of-the-art scoreboard and ring beam that allows basically any stat you want to be shown throughout the match. The video board on the scoreboard is the top of line in terms of scoreboards, HD and all.

With a Wednesday night match this year versus the Huskers, it is probably not in the cards for me, but maybe next year if they have it on a Saturday.

When I attended school there the games were either in the Women's Intramural Activities Building (Yes, that was the name of it - even though we played there too - it is now called the "Forker Buiding" although I don't remember it being two stories and the online floor plan doesn't show the pool) or Hilton. Hilton was like playing in a airline hanger. Of course, it didn't help that you were on a first name basis with everyone there (without taxing your memory much). I always thought they should play the women's games in the old Armory Building again. It was great before Hilton was built. The basketball teams didn't like it, but it was perfect for Volleyball. Unfortunately, I guess they have divided the main floor into classrooms now. It was all open when I was there.

I can't say enough about Christy. You won't meet a nicer person. However, it's hard for me or anyone in my entourage to make it to the state of Iowa. It's just not a popular destination. Probably a lot of nice down-to-earth people, much like the folks in Nebraska, but I can't think of a single reason to visit.

Would the broadcast people please get a clue?
ISU will score a point (so far so good). They will then show the graphic of the volleyball and spinning Cy (takes several seconds) then show a replay of the entire point or part of the point in slow motion, then more spinning Cy. By that time the next play is already over. Very irritating. They even did it on the first "match point"!
If you want to show replays of great plays, fine. But get in and get out quickly and stop trying to be fancy. It is not fancy - just irritating.

I would imagine Hilton isn't a great volleyball venue, because you have to have a big crowd (like the Cyclones get for women's hoops) for it to look full. It and the Hearnes Center in Columbia were both part of the spend a hundred bucks total on exterior decoration school of arenas. It is pretty amazing what Christy has managed to do there in such a short time, though. They should make the NCAAs this year, which is pretty impressive considering how downtrodden the program was. KSU seems to be headed in the other direction, unfortunately for them. Iowa is not exactly my idea of a primo vacation destination, although I do have to drive through it to go see some of my friends. Ames is not a bad college town, and there is a very good Indonesian restuarant there by the campus, so it has that going for it. I have found Iowans to be friendly as a group, so that is a positive.
