Are player normally asked to try out for the team? What about talented players that fly under the radar being with a program that has not been overly successful. Can these players try out or is by invitation only?

People get invited. But at certain points through out the year they hold Open Tryouts where anyone can attend. That is when you can get seen by the US Coaches if they know nothing about you.

And don't forget to bring some cash. I thought you wanted serious discussions only. Yeah.

Can these players try out or is by invitation only? 3. Collegiate, high school and club coaches may recommend to the National Team Head Coach that a particular athlete is highly skilled and has the potential to be selected to the National Team and should be invited to a tryout.
4. Decisions as to which athletes are invited to tryouts and / or named to the National Team Roster are the responsibility of the Head Coach and based on statistical and observational performance selection criteria.
Typically there is at least one open tryout session within six weeks of the conclusion of the NCAA season. Fees will run you a couple hundred bucks if you want to stay at the Training Center. I believe you can stay off-site and get a discount in the fees, but I don't remember how much.

I know a player who wanted to get a shot at the NT.... ....injury issues at the time of the open tryout..... Head coach had not said anything to her about the subject either, which she was politely waiting for......so family/friends told her to "go tell the coach what you want". She did. Coach arranged for a date to visit Colo Spr. She played on NT for some 3 years.
Players with interest need to get their coach in their corner and/or contact NT and show up for the Open Tryouts.....ya never know who will catch the eye of the current NT staff. Being bashful does not help.

You have to have a certain amount of initiative. If you want to go somewhere in life, don't wait for someone else to help you get there. But the fact of the matter is, I'd say 9/10 people have NO initiative. Thank god for the other 1/10.
