It seems like this year they are really trying to speed up their offense. It seem to me that almost all of her sets are "low" and require the hitter to already be in motion at the same time she sets the ball. There isn't time for the hitter to see where it's going and then react.
I'm not sure Pavan can hit OVER Hooker! If anything, in that case it's the other way around. But yes, she can hit over many blockers.
Jordan looked pretty normal to me tonight. She seemed to be serving much more agressively than she has been recently.
If anything, Rachel Holloway seemed to be struggling some.

Wow, the Huskers may go undefeated this year...shades of the 2000 year when their big gun (Metcalf) redshirted.
I have a feeling Cook redshirted Houghtelling for this reason.
Superstition maybe?

I am all for a fast offense but if you have a player with reach such as Pavan then let her use it. I noticed many times tongiht that she had to hit with elbow bent instead of full extension making her much more blockable.

I find it amazing. If all of us, who are not volleyball gurus such as John Cook can see that the sets are too low, then why can't he. And, if he does, why doesn't he fix it before its too late. Baffling.

seems like Paven said set higher and Cook motioning to speed up the offense. I have always thought sets to Paven should be higher her whole career so she could hit over blocks like Hooker, but obviously she is effective anyway. In second game when Rachel's block got tooled, Paven barked at her, and in 3rd when Schwartz did not get to a ball which I did not think she should be able to, Sarah seemed to tell Schwartz she was out of position, quite sternly. Hope this was just a bad attitude game for the team and does not continue lest they implode!

There is nothing wrong for players to get on each other as long it's not I'm perfect and you're not. :-)

Highflyer, how many of you "volleyball gurus" have, won national championships, COY, and olympic medals?

Some Nebraska fans blew me off for saying the same thing after going to the Texas match. Competitiveness is one thing - having a bad attitude is another. There was one time when some words were exchanged when I saw it.

Nebraska need only to refer to USC 2004. USC's setters, Alli Dillon and Kimi Freeburg would continually underset Emily Adams and Bibi Candelas rendering them virtually ineffective. The Women of Troy were able to overcome Nebraska and make it to the final four but paid the price in the National Semis against the Gophers when Adams and Candelas could not be effective due to poor set placement.
Pavan is a big girl, she should get the ball where she likes it. She reminds me a little of Clay Stanley (without his power obviously) when she soars for a kill.

I don't know what the coach is saying, but if it is true that he is telling the setter to set lower and quicker, and the big hitter is saying set it higher, that's a tough position to be in. They need to iron those 'small' details out so that nobody is getting 'blamed'.

It certainly is possible to set a higher ball with a quicker tempo. The speed of the ball, ya know?

Some Nebraska fans blew me off for saying the same thing after going to the Texas match. Competitiveness is one thing - having a bad attitude is another. There was one time when some words were exchanged when I saw it. It's really not that uncommon. I have seen a couple of matches where Courtney Thompson has gotten on her teammates. I also have seen Bryn Kehoe really get on someone during the BYU match I believe. It happens. Also Cook himself was getting exasperated with the play of the entire team: excerpt from the Lincoln Journal StarIt’s officially crunch time for top-ranked Nebraska.
You could probably tell just by looking at the calendar, but on the first Saturday of November, when the Huskers predictably dispatched of No. 17 Oklahoma, the best indication of heightened intensity was the working over that coach John Cook gave his notebook.
He slammed it against his hand, slapped it against a chair and otherwise wanted to take a bite out of it on a night when Nebraska should have been celebrating a win that all but guaranteed the undefeated Huskers another Big 12 Conference volleyball championship.
“You asked those guys if they were satisfied that you beat a good team 3-0 even though we didn’t play great,” Cook said. “I think you’re satisfied in September, but in November, it’s not very satisfying.”

Highflyer, how many of you "volleyball gurus" have, won national championships, COY, and olympic medals? If you read the quote, I never said I was a volleyball guru. Cook has as much talent as anyone in the country, as he did last year, but I have grave doubts about their ability to win it all. Something is missing and IMHO I believe that starts at the top.

Not more not less than any of the other top teams contending this year including the four Pac-10 teams, Penn St., Florida, and Texas. So, to be fair, whichever one of these 7 teams does not win the NC their problems must start at the top. It has been well documented, by Husker fans themselves, that Nebraska may not win the title this year as they have several issues to deal with including the sidelining of their POY, and departure of their best MB and one of their best if not the best all around player. Other teams have their own issues. Except for possibly one of these 8 coaches, there is nothing to prove as far as coaching abilities.

Nebraska had alot of talent last year no doubt . This argument has gone full circle about one thousand times. To continue to insinuate that the Huskers choked belittles the accomplishment of Washington. This year it seems the championship is anyones guess. I am pleasantly surprised how the Huskers have performed so far. I think John Cooks record speaks for itself at Nebraska and Wisconsin.
