More than disappointing. I don't know what happened, but from the looks of the boxscore, our OHs are struggling. What is up w/ Kyla? She had a bad, bad, weekend. And unfortunately, Meghan struggled tonight too. Perhaps our passing wasn't so good. It was looking like we had a good chance of winning second place outright in the conference. Now, we could be as low as third or fourth, esp. with Wisconsin and Purdue coming up. Damn. Damn. Damn.

Purdue is now two matches behind Minnesota in the standings, so they will probably need to win out to get above fourth. The Wisconsin-Minnesota winner should be in good shape to get at least a share of second, barring a big upset (versus NW/Illinois/Iowa at home or at IU), because even beating Purdue at Purdue and having the other team lose there would still only get you into a tie again. Still, I guess this match proves you have to be ready to play every night. Especially after last night, I really didn't see it coming. I thought MSU would have the best chance to get an upset this weekend, but the Wolverines bounced back from last night's sweep and played well.
I am surprised that the Gophers had so little success slowing down Michigan. They just didn't stop anyone. I know the outsides struggled, but it looks like the ball control was decent for the Gophers from the set distribution. Thus, I would think it was the defense that was the biggest problem, surprisingly.

The Gophs need at least one OH to be very good -- and Jones hitting .250 for the weekend didn't help. Let's hope Meghan starts hitting like she was, but we still don't know what the exception was: the hot streak or the last 3 matches.
Sure don't like the idea of kicking 2nd place away again this year, but the Badgers have to be considered the favorite now. Big match in Madison.

It is kind of strange that the Badgers' left side attack is looking pretty good, while the Gophers seem to be struggling there. That has been more of a strength for the Gophers over the last few years. I am fine with that, though, and I hope it continues through the match in Madison. I get the feeling that the Gophers will bounce back, though, and sweep both their matches next weekend. The match in Madison should be good. Too bad it is on a wednesday, which might lead to a smaller crowd.

I wouldn't necessarily blame the gopher OH's for this loss. Michigan hit .368 as a team. Their middles hit .526 (Karpiak) and .300 (Milller), leaving Bruzdzinski (.368) and the freshman Rood (.407) free to romp around on the outside before the double block could get set up.
Moving Miller back to the middle has made Michigan's attack quicker and more diverse than the first meeting between these teams in Minnesota, where Michigan held 4 or 5 point leads in games one and two before failing to finish them off.
They played up to their capabilities and were the better team in every aspect tonight.

Sounds like Hartmann was struggling. When most of your hitters are off, it can be your setter. Could explain some things there.

So was the defensive game plan against Michigan the wrong one?

Not having seen the match, I shouldn't comment, but I will, anyway. Yeah, it sounds like passing and OH were issues, but don't the stats make it just look like Michigan was on fire? For Minnesota to lose that fourth game, in particular, with that high of a hitting percentage is astonishing to me.
