It was worth the drive from Austin to see TEXAS play Baylor. The first game was all Baylor. They served tough and had UT out of system a lot. When things got tight, BU let up on their powerful jump serves and TEXAS was able to pass them easily. Once UT started passing/serve receiving better it was a match. The Farrell Center does not have a VB scoreboard, so it was not easy to keep up with kills and digs. It was not obvious to me that the UT middles were playing poorly. I did notice that Armstrong was not on the sideline.
Most of the Baylor fans were cordial and some were down right friendly. Though I was curious if the big guy with the goat-tee in the lime-green t-shirt sitting in the student section_yelling_at the UT reserves was someone on this board.
Also, I thought I saw Sarah Holloway sitting in the student section. Could this be true? I had not heard where she went after UT and had not seen her on Rich Kern as a transfer. I always liked her.

I made the drive from Dallas to see the match and it was a good match and worth the drive to me too. I too heard saw the big guy with the lime green shirt on. He was really loud and I kept looking around trying to figure out where that sound was coming from until a few kids in front of me mentioned it. Engle and Hooker are gonna be great. Taylor Barnes, nothing to say about her as I've watched her here in the Dallas area since her freshman year in high school. Baylor had me a little nervous after after that first game but good to see the Lady Longhorns tighten up the defense and pull it out.

Sarah Holloway was in the crowd. She goes to Baylor. Plays on the club team who finished in the top 4 nationally and is involved in mission work and such. Heard she gave up the D1 game to get more involved with these things, Great girl. Baylor has some of the nicest, giving people in the world. That's what attracts so many to the campus. They only excepted 40 percent of the applicants. Everyone who watches the team is amazed at the talent level and the potential... Hopefully they can make a run here at the end and blast their way into the dance.

Baylor is presently 16-11 overall, but only 4-10 in the Big 12. Seriously, aside from winning at least five of the six remaining matches, do you think Baylor has a chance to make the NCAA field? The remaining schedule includes matches @ KSU, Texas Tech, Nebraska and Colorado, and home matches against Kansas and Oklahoma. Baylor should be favored against KSU, Texas Tech and Kansas. Wins in those matches would put their conference record at 7-10 and I think they would then need to win two of the three remaining matches to have any chance at all. Even then I'm not sure that a conference record of 9-11 would be good enough, when there should be six other Big 12 teams with better conference records. While the Bears have obviously shown improvement this season, I don't see them having the maturity and consistency required to win five of their six remaining matches.

You are probably right, BUT, it's possible so I will prepare the fields for rain. If they did pull it together and won 5 of the last 6 that would have them at a 9-11 record and a 21-12 overall record. I think that would get them in. Even 4 wins might work. Kansas got in with 8 wins last year and less then 20 wins overall. Certainly lots of work ahead but you gotta believe baby!!

Breyfogle has a lot of potential. She outblocked Texas easily. I rewound and watched three times that point when the slide was much too low to even tip the ball over and Hooker was already over the net waiting to stuff it, and Breyfogle very smartly didn't try to swing at it or joust with Hooker, instead she reached straight from under the ball and swiped it straight off Hooker's hands into the 2nd ref. Nice!
Your passers are decent but still have communication issues. What you're lacking is someone outside who can make the right play in crunch situations and NOT swing wild. If you can recruit (or train) a strong OH, you may sneak into the top half of your conference next year. Also, since you're shorter than teams like Texas/Nebraska, you need to put more work into hitter/blocker coverage, especially against big right sides. Pavan and Engle are using their height advantage to exploit your left side defense, tipping over the block when you're too deep and finding the corner when you're too short.

Both starting OH's are freshman.

I'm not an expert on this, but I've often heard a coach comment about how one team may have been doomed in a game because of how the rotations where turned in by both teams. I'm not 100% sure on the details, but I think it has to do with matching up blockers against hitters and vice versa. Some people wonder how the same team might look unstoppable one game and average the next. I'd think that perhaps matching up some super leftside against a 5'7" setter with and average to poor block could be a real difference maker. The sense I get is that it's pretty much a crapshoot of how the coaches turn in their lineups.

OveranUnder, that's a pretty good evaluation. You're right, Breyfogle is a great talent and at 6 foot she plays like 6-4 and is very, very strong. She is hitting over .300 and at 1.5 blocks per game. She will be a force over the next 3 years. The passing is just average and at times they step up and pass well. The OH's are both freshmen and show promise. The other freshmen Keeton has a monster arm but is raw. 2 OH's are coming in 2007 so hopefully we get 2 out of all those OH's that can get us to the next level. Not much anyone can do to Engle and Pavan other than switch up the defense and pray:)

From what I understand Baylor has another incredible class coming in- they should continue to improve. I'm sure that solid coaching staff is addressing their shortcomings with their next recruiting class. I still think 8 conference wins and Baylor should be dancing!
