No. 25 Ohio State Upsets No. 14 Purdue, 3-0
Ohio State's Anna Szerszen has a match-high 18 points in the victory over the Boilermakers
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 25th ranked Ohio State (17-7, 7-7 Big Ten) women's volleyball team used a match-high 18 points from Anna Szerszen (Fr., Conflans Ste Hne, France) to upset No. 14 Purdue (19-6, 9-5), 3-0 (30-18, 31-29, 31-29) Saturday night in St. John Arena. Szerszen produced a match-high 15 kills, adding an ace serve, a solo block and two block assists in the match. Purdue's Carrie Gurnell and Stephanie Lynch shared team-high point honors with 11.5 each. Gurnell had 11 kills and an assist block while Lynch recorded 10 kills, a solo block and one assist block.
From a 3-3 tie in game one, a Purdue kill by Lindsay Shondell and an OSU error gave the Boilermakers a 5-3 lead. A kill by Felicia Jones (Sr., Concord, Ont.) and a Purdue error tied the game at five. At seven-all, a Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) kill and two Purdue errors gave the Buckeyes a 10-7 lead. At 13-10, OSU, two kills from Szerszen, one from Danielle Meyer (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and a Purdue error opened a 17-10 Ohio State lead. Leading, 22-15, a Buckeye block from Meyer and McCarthy and two McCarthy ace serves gave Ohio State a 25-15 lead. Purdue kills by Lynch and Gurnell made it 25-17. Two Purdue errors, a Marisa Main (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) kill and a Main-Meyer block set game point at 29-17. A Lynch kill stopped the first game point at 29-18. A Szerszen kill ended the game at 30-18 to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .273 for the game to .108 for Purdue.
Game two saw 10 early ties to reach 11-all. Two OSU errors gave Purdue a 13-11 lead. A Szerszen kill cut the margin to 13-12. Purdue kills by Gurnell and Lynch and two OSU errors opened a 17-12 Boilermaker lead. Two Szerszen kills and a Jones-McCarthy block cut the Purdue lead to two at 17-15. Three consecutive kills from Lynch took the lead to five at 20-15. At 22-17, Buckeye kills from Meyer and Stevens, a McCarthy ace serve and a Purdue error cut the lead to one at 22-21. Two Buckeye errors and a Samantha Mader kill put Purdue up by four at 25-21. At 27-23, a Purdue error, a Main ace serve and a Szerszen kill made it a one-point game at 27-26. Purdue, with a Lynch kill and an OSU error reached game point at 29-26. The Buckeyes then held off three game points to tie it at 29. A Jones kill, a Jones-McCarthy block and a Szerszen ace serve tied the game at 29. OSU's Stevens, with two consecutive kills, won the game for Ohio State at 31-29, to give the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .312 for the game to .302 for Purdue.

At 10-7, OSU, a Danita Merlau kill, a Merlau-Elizabeth Jacques block and a Buckeye error tied the game at 10. A Stevens kill made it 11-10, OSU. A Merlau kill, an OSU error and a Gray ace serve put Purdue ahead, 13-11. A Buckeye kill from Stevens and Purdue kills by Merlau and Gurnell made it 15-12. OSU kills from Meyer and Main and a Jacques solo block cut the Purdue lead to two at 16-14. Two kills from Gurnell made it 18-14. A Kristen Dozier (Fr., Sandy Spring, Md.)-Szerszen block and two Purdue errors cut the lead to one at 18-17. A Gurnell kill made it 19-17 Purdue. Ohio State tied the game at 19 with kills from McCarthy and Stevens. An OSU error gave Purdue a 20-19 lead. A Stevens' kill tied the game at 20. Two Purdue errors gave Ohio State a 22-20 lead. Kills from Jacques and Meyer made it 23-21. A Merlau solo block and a Gurnell kill tied the game at 23. Tied at 25, a Szerszen kill and a Boilermaker error gave Ohio State a 27-25 lead. Errors by both teams made it 28-26. Merlau, with two kills tied the game at 28. Ohio State, with a McCarthy kill, had match point at 29-28. Jacques, with a kill, stopped the match point to tie the game at 29. A kill from Stevens made it 30-29 for OSU's second match point. The Buckeyes, with a Szerszen kill, won the game, 31-29, to win the match 3-0. Ohio State hit .356 for the game to .196 for Purdue.
Ohio State hit .318 for the match to .206 for Purdue. The Boilermakers had a 50-49 edge in kills while Ohio State had a five-to-two advantage in ace serves with McCarthy recording a match-high three for the Buckeyes. Purdue gave up 12 service errors to four for the Buckeyes. On defense, Ohio State had a 45-44 edge in digs with Purdue's Brittany Dildine recording a match-high 16. At the net, the Buckeyes had a seven-to-five margin in team blocks. Buckeyes' McCarthy and Jones had three assists each with Szerszen recording a solo and two assists to share match-high honors. At setter, Purdue's Gray had a match-high 42 assists with OSU's Main collecting 37.
Ohio State continues a two-week home stand next Wednesday when they host third rank and Big Ten leader Penn State (24-1, 13-1) at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena
