FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball team made history Saturday night as they broke a 52 match losing streak against Big West Conference foe UC Santa Barbara with a 23-30, 30-25, 30-22, 19-30, 15-10 victory over the Gauchos in front of a crowd of 256 in Titan Gymnasium.
With the loss UCSB falls to 14-11 on the season and 6-6 in Big West play while Fullerton improves to 16-9 overall and 5-6 in conference. The Gauchos, who were previously undefeated against the Titans, now hold a series record of 52-1 against Fullerton.
Senior outside hitter Jamie Garbisch had a match-high 22 kills accompanied by 18 digs for her eleventh double-double of the season. The Anaheim, Calif. native also delivered a career-high three service aces in the loss. Senior Olivia Waldowski led the team with a .250 clip on the evening with 14 kills on 36 attempts with five errors. Junior Brett Quirarte had 12 kills on the evening and a team-high five block assists.
Sophomore outside hitter Lauren McLaughlin also posted a double-double on the evening with 12 kills and a career-high 23 service aces. Freshman setter Stephanie Brandt put up 52 assists on the evening and notched a career-best 17 digs. Rounding out the Gaucho leaders was senior libero Emily Hendrickson who also posted a career-high with 29 scoops.
Breanna Trudeau, who notched 18 kills and 22 digs along with three of Fullerton's nine aces, led the Titans. Amanda Pfielschiefter had a match-high .393 clip on the evening (13-2-28) and also posted six block assists and one solo block. As a team, the Titans outblocked UCSB 18.5 to 7.
Julie Geissert had 48 helpers for Fullerton and Vanessa Vella tied Hendrickson with a match-high 29 digs on the evening.
The first game saw three tied scores and one lead change early in the frame, but with the score even at 10-10, UCSB used a six-point run to gain its first substantial lead of the evening. The Gauchos saw their most efficient hitting in the first frame as they outhit the Titans .256 to .136 to earn the first win of the night at 30-23.
In frame two, UCSB jumped out to an early lead with a 6-1 run. The Gauchos continued to hold the advantage until Fullerton chipped away at the lead with a 10-3 run that tied the game at 20-20 followed by 5-0 run to grab the upper hand. Fullerton took the game at 30-25 to tie the match at 1-1 heading into the locker rooms.
Fullerton commanded the third frame early and posted its best hitting of the night with a team clip of .325 to gain the match advantage with a 30-22 game three win. Unfortunately for the Titans, UCSB fought back in the fourth frame and after a few early ties, the last being at 7-7, the Gauchos jumped ahead and held-on to take the game with the biggest margin of victory of the night at 30-19.
Freshman Rebecca Saraceno scored first in frame five with a kill, the teams remained even until the score reached 5-5, after which the Titans posted a 5-2 run to gain a 10-7 lead. Fullerton maintained the lead and a kill by Brittney Moore sealed the frame at 15-10 earning the Titans the historic 3-2 match victory.
