Score one for the libero
Elyse Cusack - Florida Freshman, Libero, 5-9 (Melrose, Fla. - Gainesville High School)
Elyse Cusack, a freshman libero for #7 Florida, has been named Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week based on her stellar defensive performances in Florida's wins last week over two conference rivals, nationally ranked #11 LSU, and Arkansas. In the Gators' win over LSU, Cusack collected 46 digs in the four-game match, demolishing the previous school record of 34, which was set in 1987. Her 46 digs also tied for sixth-most in NCAA history for a four-game match. Cusack followed that up with a 25-dig performance to lead all players in Florida's four-game win over Arkansas. For the week, Cusack averaged 8.88 digs per game in helping Florida march closer to its goal of a sixteenth consecutive SEC title. Cusack is the seventh player from Florida to earn the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week honor. The Gators are coached by Mary Wise.

Congratulations. I've seen three Florida matches this year and Cusack is my favorite player to watch on that team.

8.88 digs/gm.... that is just unreal!
congrats to her...
and to the AVCA for not shying away from a defensive player who clearly deserved it...

It's nice to see a libero get it for a change. Most of the time it is given to the big time hitters and blockers. Kind of like the center for a football team, they don't get much recognition, but the team can't get along without them.

It's only the 2nd time in 14 years a defensive specialist/libero has received the award. UCSB's Kristin Nelson received it in 2004.

hahahaha those are wretched teams they played against and as always stats in that worthless league only fool the losers those stats are not accurate in terms of quality and in the overall sense of things lsu and arkansas don't have good hitters so it's obvious that there will be more balls to dig for avca to award yet another nobody is xpected and for a nobody in a loser league to 'stand out' based on the stats is utterly predictable remember it doesn't matter how hard or how fast the ball is hit if it's hit @ or w/in 2arms length of a defender the probability of that defender to dig it & keep it in play would be high compared to a more diversified attempt from good hitters (emphasis on good like the hitters from the western leagues)

Congrats to Elyse. She was definitely deserving of the award and recognition from the AVCA. Hopefully she will get 40 something digs tomorrow night. Maybe that will mean the match goes to more than just three games. LOL. Are you guys there singing like the ones at the UT matches Gatorvball?
