Just got done looking at the brackets for the CIF Southern Section playoffs for girls' volleyball.
What's interesting in Div I-AA (top division) is that Mira Costa and Redondo Union are in the same league (Bay League). Mira Costa as the league winner and #1 seed from the league received a first-round bye. Redondo Union as the league runner-up (I'm assuming) and the #2 seed from the league ALSO received a first-round bye. Both these teams must be very strong this year to have both received byes in the first-round.
I'm not sure I like the re-alignment of the playoff structure this year. In previous years, the CIF-SS would seed teams in playoff divisions based on enrollments. This year, they seeded teams based on league strength. We'll see how it goes. Most of the time, the early rounds of the playoffs end up being squashes, and you don't see the picture clearing up till about the quaterfinals.
